Video Chipset News

There's some news on nVidia's and ATI's new video chipsets which are planned for release in February at the VR-Zone.

Both of the new chipsets will use a 0.15 micron GPU. The nVidia 4 (NV25) is expected to be much alike the chip used in the X-box and will host a more powerful T&L engine, updated anti aliasing algorithms, twin monitor support, and support for 128Mbit DDR. Here's a possible product lineup:
  • GeForce4 Ti1000 (High-End) - 6 rendering pipelines, 128bit memory interface, 128 ÌB DDR SDRAM, Core frequency of 350Mhz, Clock frequency of 350Mhz DDR(700Mhz), AGP 8x
  • GeForce4 Ti500 (Mainstream) - 6 rendering pipelines, 128bit memory interface, 128 ÌB DDR SDRAM, Core frequency of 300Mhz, Memory frequency of 300Mhz DDR(600Mhz), AGP 8x
  • GeForce4 MX460 (Mass Market) - 4 rendering pipelines, 128bit memory interface, 64 ÌB DDR SDRAM, Core frequency of 300Mhz, Memory frequency of 275Mhz DDR(600Mhz), AGP 8x
  • GeForce4 MX440 (Mass Market) - 4 rendering pipelines, 128bit memory interface, 64 ÌB DDR SDRAM, Core frequency of 275Mhz, Memory frequency of 200Mhz DDR(400Mhz), AGP 8x
  • GeForce4 MX420 (Low End) - 2 rendering pipelines, 128bit memory interface, 64 ÌB DDR SDRAM, Core frequency of 250Mhz, Memory frequency of 166Mhz DDR(333Mhz), AGP 8x

ATI's Radeon lineup isn't as clear, but chipset cores are expected to run over 300MHz. So much for the 6 month cycle...

hmm....no word on costs yet im guessing?

They Will probably be around $350-400 and should lower the price of the GF3.

I'll give you a word on costs: Expensive.

Hopefully that'll push the GeForce 2 Ultra below 100 dollars.

whats the point the software coming out for the PC is nothing but suck for the last year. im not dropping anymore cash on PC hardware especially a vid card that is never going to have its full capacity used before its down to 90$. all the game makers still code for the lowest common denominator so i dont see any point at all in spending 300$+ on a vid card when none of its advanced features will be used in games. the xbox halo and DOA3 are perfect examples of what the current tech is capable of graphically yet we are going to be inundated with crap like DAOC and Worlds of warcraft...

so my question is why upgrade???

Yeah there's not really much incentive to buy TOTL right now. However, there's some big titles coming in 2002. Jedi Knight 2 should be awsome. I'm sure it will run on older cards, but I want everything enabled when I play it. Duke Nukem Forever also looks very detailed. I'm sure higher end hardware will be useful for it. (If they ever release the PC version.)

Jedi2 is from what i can tell of it based on the Q3 engine coreect me if im wrong and i know that DKF is Q3 based. so no real eye-candy there u cant get with a gforce2

Posted by: Ion Silverbolt

Duke uses the UT engine. It's also been heavily modified.

I'm sure they all will run on older cards with some of the eye candy turned off. Especially considering Duke is coming out on the X Box first.

No way man... the fact that duke is gonna be on the xbox just means that it will have MORE graphical flair than something that comes out on PC first.

I'm looking forward to DNF. JK2 though... well, every quake engined game I've ever played feels exactly the same as quake. And I don't like quake.

Yeah but how many games use the PC to its full potential? The display alone enables them to do more. It's only a matter of time. Doom 3 is supposed to push the limits. I would imagine Duke would considering how long they been working on it.

I don't know how far it is away because it's not here, but PC's will eventually pass them up unless HDTV gets a lot cheaper.

PC games will only pass the xbox visually when the GF3 feature set becomes min spec in PCs.

Should have waited to buy mine, I probably could have bought it cheaper.

I just purchased the GeForce 3 200ti, it's an awsome card, I replaced the Diamond Viper 770 ultra that I had.

I think Ill wait too. The only PC game I been playing lately is RTCW and my FPS is around 40. So I guess I dont really need one right now.

I've had a geforce 3 since release.

graphics arent what is going to make or break Jedi2 its how they implement the force powers and lightsaber dueling. Jedi Knight and Jedi knight mystery of the sith are still the best FPS out there for multi. their only drawback was that there was no way to find other people online u had to know the IP of the game and set up a game by some other means ie battlenet or icq. i remember getting 15 folk online with the vast majority using dialup and almost no lag in the game. we used to have a blast with it. graphics cannot and will never make a game in and of themselves they can only add to a game. a game with bad graphics and good gameplay will sell like mad take starcraft and diablo as examples...
while gorgeous games like Jane's WWII Fighters even tho it was a work of art graphically just sucked @ss cuz the gameplay wasnt there. one of the absolute most fun to play flite sims out there was chuck yeager's air combat in all its 256 colour 2d glory. same goes for masters of orion2 and great naval battles. until the game makers finally get a clue and start working on gameplay instead of exclusively eyecandy we will have another abyssmal year like the last for games on the PC.
i really doubt that duke is gonna be a good game i think that it will be yet another Q2/Unreal clone when its all said and done and flop about like a dead fish when it hits PC. Duke may be a fun rental for xboxers but as far as PC goes i think its way past due to end up being a good game. if duke had of been released on time maybe. but we are still using voodoo2 and the original TNT as lowest common denominator in games so dont expect much for the next year graphically for the PC i just hope someone out there gets a clue and goes back to putting gameplay into games. xbox is going to blow everything out of the water for both gameplay and graphics for the next year or so. right now everyone is going port happy porting all the old PS1 and 2 stuff over to Xbox. but the middle of this coming year is when the really good stuff will hit.
