physics project

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

heres my second to last final project in physics:

i have three items. one is a milk carton, the other two are eggs. what i do, is put the two eggs in the carton, drop it from the gym bleachers, and rig my carton so the eggs do *not* break.

there are a few limitations. i can do anything to the inside (with the limitations in mind), but nothing to the outside. the eggs must be able to move (this eliminates covering the eggs in foam, or filling the carton with water and freezing it, which might not work anyway), the eggs must not be tampered with, and they can not be my eggs. we get them the day of the project. that doesnt leave much constructing time, just the ideas ahead.

score is out of a hundred. each unbroken egg is fifty points. a crack knocks it down fourty. a broken egg is zero. and i can guess that if one is broken, the other will most likely be broken as well.

this is what i got in mind:

1. not even draining the carton, and adding the eggs. the whole idea is to slow down the momentum to a stop without the eggs hitting the bottom, so liquid might as well work.

2. adding rubber bands to the six sides of the inside of the carton, and attaching the eggs to it. actually, this would only work with one egg as far as i know.

any ideas?

There's always room for Jello! Make sure it's somewhat warm though. Cold Jello isn't as soft.

But the Jello needs to be cold in order to set or it's just liquid.

I guessing the milk carton is a quart carton. Off the top of my head, I would suggest this.

Make two tubes slightly larger than the largest eggs and the length of the milk carton. Put a 1/4" hole about 1" up from the bottom of both tubes. Make a stopper and string for each tube for these 1/4" holes. Mount the two tubes securely to the walls of the carton and seal the bottoms.

Now, fill both tubes (stoppers in) with water and put the eggs in the top of the tubes.

Drop the carton while holding onto the strings connected to the plugs. The plugs should release on the carton drop. When the carton hits the ground, the water should squirt out each of the holes at the bottom and cushion the eggs down the tubes. The water squirts into the main part of the carton.

Damn it, he can put it in a cooler! Gel it before he gets there!

Is the only limitation that the eggs must be free to move inside?

wet sponges?

Instead of using milk or water, try using hair gel mixed with water (about a 75% gel 25% water mixture, mixed in a blender would be good).

Gel has better cushioning properties than water alone.

Or you could just use straight gel.

If the eggs have to come out of the carton un-mucky, then fill plastic baggies with gel and line the carton with it.

yes, any gel will help. hair gel is actually a little thin. you want a really thick one. ^^

the eggs can come out in any form, as long as they are a. complete eggs (not tampered with), b. not cracked, and c. not frozen.

kane, the tube thing would work if i could do anything after the carton has been dropped, which i cant. that would require having a part of the device outside of the box, which we cant do.

hair gel sounds like it would work. thanks for all of your imput. if i had to make it so that the eggs came out unmucky, then the bags still might not work, i dont know. i'll try a few of these today.

thanks for the input

Let us know how it turns out!

well, we had todo this in 6th grade but we got to use whatever we wanted for a container and it was just 1 egg... people used jello, i dont remember how it worked... i put the egg inside a nerf football, it survived the landing(off the top of the 2 storey school) but when we tried to rip open the football it broke.
a friend used a coffee can and rigged up rubberbands for the egg to fit into, and then the free space he used those tiny styrafoam pellets. I don't remember if it worked or not.

9:35, that is a classic experiment. If you need a little more info on what you need to do or why, take a look at this site.

Like silicone breast implants.
