HELP!! Just got RTCW for Christmas and the darn thing wont run. I have : Dell XTS T500
Pent III
256mb Ram
GeForce 32mb AGP vid card
Windows 98
DirectX 8
and when I go to launch it stops with the message:
GLW_StartOpenGL () - could not load OpenGL substytem
when I scroll down the menu it show the last step was to initialize QGL at which point it says Missing Glide installation, assuming no 3dfx available shutting down QGL.
I rarely have problems with any games other than Crimson Skies and dont have to tweak anything much.
Can anybody help?
Posted by: Shalome
First suggestion: download and install the newest drivers for your video card.
Second suggestion: uninstall and reinstall the game.
Post back and let us know what happens. Good luck!

You can download a DirectX update (DirectX 8.1) here.

Here is the fix:
Click Start / Run.
Type "win.ini" (without quotes) and press OK.
Search for a line that says "DVA=0" (without the quotes).
Add a semicolon ( before the DVA (the line should now look like this: ";DVA=0" (without quotes))
Save and close the file
If you find this causes more problems, just take out the semicolon.
That should fix any more problems with Open GL

Tweaker you are the shit.
I can't believe one little semi-colon is the fix to the problem.
Can you tell me what that little fix did?
A little background here: I had a Riva TNT vid card and went to Nvidia web sight for latest drivers. Got error message when I tried to install. Really messed up the graphics on comp. much to wifes dismay. HEHE. Got that fixed but still couldnt play game. I upgraded to GeForce 32mb card but still couldnt play. Your fix really saved the day.
Had real hell with a game called Crimson Skies and now I am gonna go back and try that one too.
Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it.

Glad it worked!
What that piece of software went and did was this: It went to - of all places - WIN.INI (a small file in your System directory within Windows) and added/changed the following line:
DVA=0
Why? Not sure.
Anyway hope things stay working.
Good Luck!

played the first couple of levels. Combined with the new vid card, it is runnin like a dream.
Thanks again

Glad to hear it! Good Luck!

iicanceii, your problems might not only be with what wolverine had, but the system you are running. The minimum system requirements(not the recommended ones) for RTCW is:
400mhz CPU
16mb Video Card with Full OpenGL Support
Direct X 8.0a
What version of windows are you running? I know that 95 and Xp have problems with RTCW.
Posted by: iicanceii
err i have windows 95, before i had win98 but formatted and lost it.. :/ i have direct x. 8.0a i had that same problem with quake 3 team arena, are the system requirments the same? because when i got the gl error with q3ta i just went to www.glsetup.com and downloaded it and worked fine
Posted by: SKYHN
Well if you cant fix the problem with what tweaker suggested, then it could be your setup. What kind of video card do you have exactly?

i tried the win.ini, but as i scrolled down the list i didn't see it anywhere.. look for yourself

Its probably different for you because you are running win 95, while tweakers fix is for win 98(sorry, i didnt see that before). Maybe ask tweaker about it or wait to see if he posts here again.
I wanted to know the how much ram your vid card has..
Posted by: iicanceii
sorry, i don't know how to check, i just copied and pasted from the program they had me download, thanks for your help

You need to make sure that you have an OpenGl compliant video card, and the latest drivers installed for your particular card. Make sure to run GLSetup (located on the Quake3 CD in \Quake3\Extras\) to get the latest drivers for your card installed.
Quake 3 Arena has been tested on many but not all of the major cards incorporating the chipsets listed below. They strongly recommend running Glsetup (located in the Quake3\Extras\ on your Quake3 CD). Glsetup is a program written specifically to analyze your hardware and install working OpenGl drivers for that hardware. The version of Glsetup that is included on the Quake 3 Arena CD is 1.0.0.110, however, it is constantly being updated with newer drivers from your hardware manufacturers so be sure to check www.glsetup.com often for updates. Currently, Glsetup supports the following cards:
3Dfx Voodoo, Voodoo2, Rush, Banshee, and Voodoo3
3Dlabs Permedia 2 and Permedia 3
ATI Rage 128 and Rage Pro
Intel i740
Matrox G200 and G400
NVidia Riva 128/128ZX and Riva TNT/TNT2/GeForce256
Rendition Verite 2200
S3 Savage3D and Savage4
All known issues with any of these drivers are compiled in a list and located here:
http://www.glsetup.com/ihvs/index.htm
At the present time, Glsetup does not include drivers from hardware manufacturers that are still in a BETA or TEST form. If you are experiencing problems with any of the drivers installed by Glsetup you may want to try the corresponding link for your hardware below. This is a compiled list of hardware and drivers that we know work with the game. Some of these drivers may be the same ones located in Glsetup, however some will be a bit newer and could possibly remedy any problems that you might have. As mentioned above, we recommend running Glsetup before downloading any other drivers.

Trouble Shooting:
If you are having any problems, read this first!
If you are using a config file from an older version of Quake3, we highly recommend that you remove it and make a new one with the current game. Older config files can have settings in them that may cause adverse affects within the release version of Quake3.
Hope this helps.
Post back and let us know how you make out.
