Video drivers

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: PCgeek33

OS = Win2ksp2
Vid card = tnt2 m64

The current drivers for the video card are off the win2k disk and they are dated 1999. I got the latest drivers off the nvidia site and installed. When i reboot, it freezes at the initial(mostly white colored)bootup screen. I tried every mode to re-enter and nothing worked, so i had to go in safe mode and reinstall the drivers off the win2k disk. Once i did that it booted fine.

Any idea of whats going on?

Thanx

I using the same software and video card.

The install driver I downloaded is WinXP_21.83.exe.

It works fine for me.

Check your Windows Device Manager (go to Start —> Settings —> Control Panel —> System —> Device Manager) to determine if all the drivers are installed properly. The properties dialog for the Display Adapter will show if the driver is functioning properly. If not, a yellow icon with an exclamation point appears next to the device driver in question.

Also I assuming you know how to update your video drivers the proper way.

But incase you want to double check to make sure go here and follow through step by step on un-installing and re-installing video drivers.

Good Luck!

Thanx guys. The new drivers i tried to install are 23.11.

And Tweaker, ill check out that site. Being an engineering and programming student, i am pretty familiar with changing drivers, but not as thorough as the site you offered. ....The prob with doing that is that i have a really nice(HA)K6-2 board with onboard video. I disabled that and have been using the tnt2. XP and win2k dont seem to like that, or maybe theres something ive missed and its not functioning at 100%.

Windows 2000 and XP detect EVERYTHING. You can't stop them from doing it. Not even if the device is disabled in BIOS.

So, after all your devices are detected and installed, disable the onboard video device under Device Manager.

KDR Kane ...

I downloaded the drivers u mentioned and also disabled the vga device.

Earlier i tried installing the 21.83 drivers and got the same result(freezing at bootup)as i did with the 23.11 drivers. ...I guess ill try again now that the other is disabled. ....With my luck it wont make a difference.

The only reason this has bugged me so much lately is because i got Return to castle wolfenstein and when i try to run it i get this error --> GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem .......From looking around on Google, this error seems to be somewhat common, but the most common fix is installing new drivers ....Well, now you see why im so frustrated. If it wont let me install new drivers, then i suppose im stuck.

But ill try again with these new drivers.

If you think of anything else, plz post it.

Thanx

I just helped someone else with this problem, and it worked for him. Try it!

Here is the fix:

Click Start / Run.
Type "win.ini" (without quotes) and press OK.
Search for a line that says "DVA=0" (without the quotes).
Add a semicolon ( before the DVA (the line should now look like this: ";DVA=0" (without quotes))
Save and close the file
If you find this causes more problems, just take out the semicolon.

That should fix any more problems with Open GL

Kdr ...It didnt work ...Same feezing

Tweaker ...start>run>win.ini>ok ...Heres all i was shown -->; for 16-bit app support

Go here and make sure you download the drivers for your OS.

This is the one you want, make sure you install these properly or they won't work right.

Nvidia Detonator 4 XP WinXP/2000 Drivers 23.11
The drivers available here are NVIDIA reference drivers and are provided...
OS: Windows 2000/XP

Tweaker..

I have the 23.11 drivers. When i install them my computer wont restart. It just freezes during bootup.

Presently the only drivers that are working are the ones off the win2k disk. - which makes no sense.

Any idea why "DVA=0" isnt listed when i go into win.ini?

A lot of people are having problems with these drivers from what I can see. The feedback I get is they went back to the 21.83 drivers and it seemed to fix the freeze problem.

As for the DVA=0 not showing up, thats a good thing because the fix actually removes that. You should not have that listed. I posted that fix incase some software you might have installed created this line.

Anyway, try the other drivers and see what that does.

Post back and let us know your progress.
Good Luck!

Well ive tried the 23.11 and the 21.83 drivers and it freezes on both.

argh!

Try older drivers and see if they work:

Go to this site:
http://www.dbsnet.co.za/detonator/#drivers

And try the detonator drivers starting from 5.22 ... then work your way up until you find the drivers that work ... stick around for more suggestions and post back on your progress...

Posted by: PCgeek33

ok ...im getting the 5.22 drivers, and ill go down the list. Ill post again when im done.

Posted by: Kdr Kane

hmm... If you have an VIA chipset on your motherboard, those drivers should be updated also.

There is a problem with NVidia and VIA hardware compatibility unless you update.

Posted by: PCgeek33

Update what exactly? ...This is definately one to make you go "hmmmm"

Im about to throw the whole pc off the roof!

Its a Biostar M5SAA board with a K6-2 450mhz cpu. The board has sis530 onboard video and sound - but i dont use the sis530. The problem since i got the TNT2 m64 card has been between the motherboard and the video card. ...If i didnt play games there wouldnt be a prob. Its because i dont use the sis 530 and instead, plug directly into the TNT2

There must be a way for this to run smoothly.
