Starcraft crashes out of nowhere
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi. When I play Starcraft or Brood War, either online or on campaign, I start the game and after some time, SC suddenly closes. Here are my system specs:
350 Mhz AMD k6-2
160 MB RAM
Trident 9750 4 Mb video card
Windows 98 SE
Plz suggest something I can do about it. It might be the patch 1.08. I've emailed Blizzard about this and it doesn't seem they would be responding anytime soon.

If there are no error messages or warning signs, it sounds like you have a corrupt file somewhere in your game files. Uninstall and reinstall the games (IMPORTANT: be SURE to uninstall first, otherwise it's pretty pointless) and then download the patches from Blizzard's ftp site.
If this doesn't fix your problem, let us know.

I tried uninstalling and installing it again, but it didn't help. But rather, disabling the sound and digital noises within the game fixes this problem. I'm going to try your suggestion again to c if it works.

First Check Your Drivers:
Please check your Computer, Video card, and Sound card Manufacturer's web site for driver upgrades
The crash may be caused by a CD-ROM read error, or corrupt game installation.
Check the following information listed for the game you are using.
CD-ROM information
StarCraft page fault in winmm.dll
Page fault in winmm.dll
This is a Multi media dll file.
Updated sound drivers
Start the game with "nosound"
Try disableing the sound card
Hope this helps.

Hey Staff people thats all u ever say "Reinstall it" and "check drivers" well ive had this problem and only way i fixed it was on my own so ill help u. The way i fixed it was i changed my motherbords round cos i found out it was a corrupt motherbord by the way does this happen in any other games that u play if u do play any???? Cos that does seem Exactly the same as my problem i had and i changed the motherbord over and it was fine.
Hopefully this can help i no it seems a bit harsh if u cant get hold of another motherbord easily but that might be the case.

Well as redundant as that might sound, this is called troubleshooting 101! So we have to start from the begining and try and narrow it down. I mean if my video card went bad I would not want someone to tell me to go buy a new system!

Thx you guyz, well, my comp is getting old and I'm saving up for a new system. This only happens to SC and BW so I think I have to tweak something, software wise. I've narrowed it down to a problem with my sound card and if I turn down all sound, then the game runs as it should. So I'm gonna get another sound card and c if that fixes the problem.
Thanks again for all the suggestions and hope this helps other people with the same problem.

Yea, that is more than likely the problem. (Sound Card)
Anyway your welcome, keep us posted on how you make out.

Ever noticed how cheaky staff people can be.. i said that cos that was exactly wat happend to me and only thing that fixed it was changing the motherbord which i worked out on my own cos all u staff people said was "Check Drivers" and all that stuff and i said "nah ive checked em all" and thats all u said for about a month and i figured it out myself u didnt seem to even try and help

of the list of things causing that problem, the motherboard is way at the bottom of the list. any problem imaginable can be caused by a bad mobo. you obviously didnt give specific enough answers to the questions, or just ignored them.

If your not happy with the suggestions here, then I suggest you take your problems somewhere else!! Like I indicated in my earlier post, this kind of problem can be a number of things, it's not a CUT and DRY answer! When you give no system specs or info other than "It Freezes On Me" There's no magic answer for this. I'm sorry if you were not satisfied with the suggestions to your problem, but we do the best we can. Enough said...

Im just sayin that ive suspected that it might of bin the problem with mine and i thought that he might of had the same problem so i merly suggested wat i did if it came down to a last resort... Enough Said

When I try to click on multiplayer to go on to battlenet, I get disconnected from my internet service. Broodwar stays running and is fine. But this happens everytime. I'm thinking maybe my internet service might not be compatible with Broodwar. Ive updated my modem driver and have the latest patch. I guess I need to uninstall and reinstall. Any more suggestions are appreciated.
