Have you tried any of these steps?
If you receiving a 'Please insert play disk' message when installing
or playing the Diablo II expansion, please try the following steps:
Solution 1
-Open My Computer from the Windows Desktop.
-Right click the CD ROM drive containing the Diablo 2. -(Classic)
Play Disk and choose OPEN.
-Right click on the D2MUSIC.MPQ file and choose COPY.
-Open the drive letter onto which Diablo 2 has been installed and
then open the Diablo II folder.
-Right click on a blank space within the Diablo II folder and choose
PASTE (If you are unable to copy this file from the CD to the Hard
Drive then the Diablo 2 Play disk may be damaged).
-Install and play the game.
Solution 2
-Right click "My Computer"
-Left Click on "Properties"
-Left Click on the "Performance" tab
-Left Click on the "File System" button
-Left Click on the CD-ROM tab
-Change the "Optimize access pattern for:" pull down menu to
-"No read-ahead"
-Set the Supplemental Cache Size to Small
-When you click OK, you will be prompted to reboot
-Install and play the game
Solution 3
-Right click on the D2MUSIC.MPQ in the Diablo II folder and select
properties.
-Unmark the box checked READ ONLY and choose OK.
-Install and play the game.

And of corse, make sure your CD-Rom is recognized in my computer, I had a problem similar to this, when my clock battery died, and my cd-roms were no longer recognized.

Hm this is really weird
I have tryied your solutions but NOTHING has worked,,
I have virus scanned my computer, no virus found, all my other games works fine with the CD so it cant be broken or anything,,
Hm well thx anyway for trying..

I had a similiar problem also, i downloaded a corrupt file from someone or something i forget, it wouldn't recognize the LOD cd, i had to Defragment,Surface Scan,Virus Scan every single kinda scan before i found out what it actually was.
I wouldn't recommend this because it too a long time.. but if you have a long time to spend go for it.

Try going into the c:\windows\temp\ dir and delete all the files and dirs there, then try starting the game again.

did you check the actual cd itself? if it has a bad scratch, it wont read.

You mean it was working and then it didn't? What did you do to the computer that caused it to act up? Even trivial little things like dusting it could be of help.

Yes i played LOD since the day it came out and the night before I played I turned off my computer, and the next day it just didnt work so I did not do anything that could cause the error
And my CD has no scraches or anything this is really weird and nothing seems to work

Peter, have you installed anything recently prior to the problem? Any tweaks you may have done? Post your system specs...

Are you trying to run the game from the executable or are you using autorun? If you're trying to use the executable, try this..
Goto "My Computer" and click on the D2 CD from the CD-ROM directly to run it. If it fails to run eject the CD tray and hit F5 while the tray is ejected. Re-insert the CD and it should autorun hopefully. If it doesn't, try hitting F5 again.
It may run if you keep trying for a while. Once I had to click on it about 8 times before it ran. Then it never acted up again since.

have you defragmented your computer recently ?
Posted by: Peter776
Nope not so recently, but i really doubt that will do any difference,,
what really bothers me is that I first had 2 hard drives and one of them i suspect might be broken so I removed it an installed Win98 and everything fresh all over again,,
and still I cant start LOD, I dont know i have done everything and the game wont start and i cant patch it to, so I give up but thx for all your help, it could helped some but not me ;(
Cya!

hmm... If you removed a hard drive, your CD drive letter probably changed.
Have you tried a reinstall?
Posted by: Peter776
yepp it changed but i reinstalled both d2 and Lod and still the same error, I dont know if i ever will be able to run the game again,,,
Posted by: Swilo
Have you tried setting the CD drive to the letter it was before it changed?
Posted by: Peter776
hey guys, I finally fixed the problem
The problem was... I had VIRUS on my computer and I did not have a clue that I had out of 8000 scanned files more than 600 infected files, including the whole c:/ catalog where my os is installed, all my games incl d2 was infected, no wonder it would not start,,
Blizzard should add that to their support, since there was nothing that read about scanning yours Harddrive for virus i did not think about it but know I know
thx and happy gaming to you all
