Windows 98 Explorer.exe problem

Hi. This is a problem that was probably mentioned by someone else before but I couldn't find it. Anyways, the problem is that my Windows 98, sometimes displays an illegal operation message. This happens randomly, it happens when I'm playing a game or when it's just sitting idle. I don't have a screen shot of the illegal operation message yet. I'll try to get one soon.

I've tried reinstalling IE 6 and ultimately Windows 98 SE. The problem keeps recurring, is there anyway I can get rid of it?

Here are relevant system specs:

350 Mhz AMD k6-2
Windows 98 SE
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6
160 MB RAM

Tell me if you need anymore info.

Soon as it comes up again, copy it down and post it. We will take from there.

Are you using "Active Desktop"? If so, that is probably a big part of your problem. On my Win98se P3 machine, I used to have problems with that all the time and finnaly I turned off active desktop and that got rid of about 85% of the errors.

If you dont have active desktop on, then check your start up progs. Make sure you dont have a bunch of junk you dont need open.

Posting the error will give a better idea of what it is too like tweaker said.

My active desktop is turned off but since the problem rarely occurs and occurs randomly, I have no way of telling if it fixed it. Anyways, for the programs that are needlessly opened, I take great (too much in fact) care to close all programs I don't need. I drive my friends crazy from using their comp and closing their useless programs after I'm done. Thanx for the advice. I hope it works...
