Running W2k SP1 as a stand alone PC. When opening Windows explorer, expanding My computer, then expanding local drive C: I get the following error log from the event files

Event Type: Information
Event Source: Application Popup
Event Category: None
Event ID: 26
Date: 1/1/2002
Time: 4:05:38 PM
User: N/A
Computer:
Description:
Application popup: Explorer.Exe - Application Error : The instruction at "0x03c9ba72" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "written".

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

When I click on Cancel - it re-sets my desktop, OK locks up the system.

Other than not being able to use Windows Explorer or being able to browse in certain applications - Everything works fine <sigh>

TIA for any help or insight you can lend.

I've seen this problem when programs were deleted, but not uninstalled corrected using Add/Remove Programs. It happens because Explorer is looking for links that are no longer available.

Log in as another user ID and see if it happens. Another user context will initialize the desktop correctly for the new user.

According to the Microsoft Knowledge Base, this is due to buffer overuns and variables that are not scoped properly or that are being handed memory which exceeds their declared size.
Supposedly, Service Pack 1 corrects this problem.
