Episode II: Attack of the BoyBands?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Just caught wind of this from RStefan01.Com... this is from SlashDot:
"It looks like George Lucas has really sold out this time. If you thought Jar-Jar Binks was bad, MTV.com is running a story that a few members of 'NSYNC will be making cameos in Episode II..."
This is from MTV.Com:
The spokesperson didn't know specifically which members have cameos in the movie... The guys will be seen for a fleeting moment in a "big scene with lots of extras."
What could "possibly" be a role for them here? Teen jedi knights? Cantina entertainment? Excuse my while I throw up...

yes, I saw this on the E! news ticker during Howard Stern. I was gonna post it, but you beat me to it.
This move is even worse than it seems (and it seems bad). Now, the fact that 4 cute boys who sing wussy songs are going to be in the movie aint terrible. Yes, no guy alive should like them, but hey, what the hell. (and yes, I am downplaying this to make my point even more obvious).
The real bad thing about this is the principal of the whole thing. This move clearly shows that George Lucas has truly sold out. Yeah, you may not like the actual boys being in the movie (I know I dont), but the fact that Lucas would tarnish the Starwars legacy by selling out and putting a famous band in the movie just because they are famous, is what really chapps my ass. Damn you George Lucas. First Jar Jar and fruity little Anakin, now the Backstreet boys!! well, look on the bright side- Satan has one more soul.
and laggy, I believe that the 'boys' will in fact be Jedi Knights- not the new cantina band (which was my first guess)

They are going to be in a quick shot as jedi knights, and they are going to be killed.

Great...Now Im definitely not gonna go see this movie.

Well at least they won't be dressed in Jar Jar Binks costumes!
Got to look at the bright side.

Opinion/Rant time:
Anyone condemning the movie for this is being absolutely childish.
What difference does it make? So they are extras in a scene... big whoop. That doesn't change a ****ing thing. If they don't have actual parts in the movie... who cares!
They aren't speaking, they aren't singing, and they are only in the background. Chances are you won't even see them unless you LOOK for them. And since most of us probably wouldn't recognize them if they kicked us in the face, I don't see what the big ****ing issue is.
"Sold out", "going pop", yeah right. The movie is the same as it's always been. Like or dislike it for what it is. Don't form an opinion of it based on something that isn't even going to touch the movie.
Grow up.
It's like screaming 'kudies' when a girl touches you.

FYI, if you really want to say george lucas sold out, perhaps you should find and watch "A Star Wars Christmas Special". Then try and decide if selling out is a new thing.

And while I'm ranting, how about this argument:
What the **** is so bad about this anyway? Are you saying that if you had the ability to pull strings to get to be in a star wars movie that you wouldn't? If you've ever liked star wars, and you say no, then you are probably just lying to yourself.
Have you ever taking a second to think that maybe they are just fans that used their status to get in a little piece of space opera history?
God knows I would.

And for the last part of my rant (I promise), ever consider that this is probably a hoax?
Considering they've most likely been done filming for a while now, I think it's quite likely.

Well I probably wasnt gonna go see it anyways....
Attack of the Clones? What were they thinking when they came up with that?
Take a look at the last movie that a couple of the guys from Nsync were in, that thing bombed harder than a bunker buster trying to hit Osama's cave, and they were the stars of that one.
If its a small part, like they play "Frozen In Carbonite Man 1 & 2" then thats fine, but if they are gonna be droid bashin, lightsabre thrashing, force using SOB's, then that would be a really bad thing.

The whole thing is moot. George Lucas was riding a crest when he created the first 3 Star War movies. The times were different and they were phenomenal. After seeing the latest, I cannot but help think he lost his magic touch in regards to the Star War universe.
The Phantom Menace was so disappointing from the standpoint of substance that I felt removed from the story line. It had lost its magic, and not because I am older and I have changed. No...it turned into a special effects uberfest at the expense of a good story line. The inclusion of Jar Jar Binks ruined it for me although I do understand the comedic foil and its uses in films.
The inclusion of NSYNC does not surprise me. Like Nova, even if they play an integral roll in the film, I am thinking that it can't do any more harm then the last movie did for the Star War fan out there.
The mistake that George Lucas made was that he waited too long to make the other 3 films. Now he is going through the motions, but it isn't the same. He has lost his sparkle, there is lead underneath, and it is showing with each Star War iteration.
To sum it all up, I don't think the fifth film will be any better then the 4th, which stank to high heaven. A true travesty if you ask me.

so Nova, tell us how you really feel.

The point, Nova, is that we're hoping the "boys" are cast as people who are obscure and do not have speaking parts. Casting "real" actors for a movie is important, especially one with the magnitude of Star Wars.
The reason why Episode 1 did not have the same magic as the past Star Wars movies is that the special effects do not have much of a problem overshadowing the actors, coz the performances of the actors did not have much substance behind their roles as opposed to the actors in Episodes 4-6.
Casting people who are VERY recognizable as musical icons do not add substance to the movie - so if they are only fleeting scenes, why cast them at all? What difference would it have made to cast regular extras? Would the boybands add more drawing power to the movie by just plastering their faces there?
This is the main reason why Leonardo DiCaprio would not have worked as an Anakin Skywalker in this movie - most people would be too concerned on seeing how a pretty face can act, rather than going with the flow of the plot.
Now, I agree that it is trivial to debate whether the boybands should have been casted or not, but it makes you wonder what other decisions George Lucas has made in Episode II ...
Yeah, I would have liked to have been included in the film, too ... but that;s only to point to my relatives that I was there - which does not do much to improve the story, does it?

I doubt the boy toys will make any real difference as there is no substance or decent plot to any of the movies. Even the books were poor. Could they be any worse than jarjar or an ewok? I watch these for the special effects only. I do not remember anyone talking about plot in the first movie, only the bar scene and the effects. I know that this is blasphemy to many.
These are visual candy and nothing more.

I watch Star Wars for the entertainment factor ... special effects might do it for me, or the fight scenes, or the dogfights in space ... I also watch it for the story factor, and my curiosity for backstories and origins.
But if it shows something annoying to me, then it loses its entertainment factor ... unfortunately, boybands are one of the things that truly annoy me. That's why I hope I don't recognize them in the movie... otherwise I'd just have to groan out loud in the theater... or maybe even laugh...

boybands for cannon fodder ... can't complain with that
Posted by: rockjock
What amazes me is that the kids think that there is a difference between nsync and backstreet boys. The only dif I can tell is a few years. The songs are the same.
Light saber fodder, yes! I'll have my boybands in small pieces - well done, thank you.

Hey, there is a long tradition of cameos in movies. Let the bubblegum crowd have their sabre slice.
Anyway, SW started as candy (not just eye), remember? They are/were supposed to be a salute to the B moves of the 50s and serials of the 30s and 40s. I was less impressed with Episode 1 as well, but I think it was because Lucas was more focused on filling in the back story of clan Skywalker rather than on the candy. Maybe he will get back to it with the Clone Wars, but from what I am seeing around, it may be more of a Gone With The WInd love story than anything else.
