DSL or cable still not an option in your area? Well, Cisco unveiled it's Long Reach Technology recently:

Hugh Barrass, Technical Leader, and his team of engineers at Cisco created the Cisco Long-Reach Ethernet (LRE) broadband networking solution—the industry's first end-to-end product line for delivering 5-15 Mbps performance over existing Category 1/2/3 wiring. With Ethernet-like performance that reaches up to 5,000 feet, LRE enables simultaneous voice, video and data applications without the need to rewire.

Broadband for everyone! No hints at the release time yet. View the press release here.

This isnt exactly related to the post, but it is about broadband.

Something I have always wondered is in Japan there is free broadband service everwhere. The government is handing it out like Afghanistan Evil Bin Laden Propaganda Fliers. Why cant we have that here?

Because Japan is cool. They make cool stuff like PS2 games, Pokemon, and Godzilla movies.

I seriously considered moving to Japan about 4 months ago. That place wreeks of awesomeness.

the japanese government obviously prioritizes technology, and considers broadband to be necessary to furthering that goal. makes it easier when everyone lives in a city too.

I bet japan will be the first country to have flying cars...
