My problem is with FPS in all of the Half-life games, it goes terribly slow with only a average FPS of 5-10, I get killed easily in all of the games.

My computer is a 266mhz (Very old...) Pentium 2 on Windows ME, I have GeForce 2 Pro, and 128 RAM.

I have 3DMark2001 and I've used it but I have no idea how to tweak my FPS... I would like to know how to tweak it so I can have better FPS in the games.

What resolution are you running in? What video mode?
I trust you have the latest reference drivers from nvidia.
It also might help to try switching OS to 98 or 2k, I'm not sure of the min requirements for ME though.

I am running 1024x768 on Software, I have the latest driver in my downloads folder, but that driver messes up a lot and I have to reboot pretty often, I don't have Win 98, I only have Win 95 .

First issue: You have a very slow processor.

Second issue: At best, you have AGP 1x, and chances are you are running that geforce 2 in a PCI slot. That would mean it's performance is severely limited.

Third issue: Your geforce isn't even being used at all unless you choose open gl or direct 3d in your video options. If you run in software, it doesn't use the 3d hardware at all.

I played the original Half-Life on a P1-200 with 64MB ram and a S3 Virge with Voodoo2 video card, it would run quite normal on 800x600 when I used OpenGL.
And like Nova said, you can't run a game like HL on that comp in software mode.

Or at least, if you run in software mode, don't even bother trying higher than 640x480 res.

Yeah, run Half-Life in OpenGL for the best performance.

Make SURE vsync is off. Stupid feature. To do this:

Right Cick on the Desktop>Properties>Settings Tab>Advanced>GeForce 2 Pro Tab>Additional Properties>OpenGL Settings Tab>Find Vertical Sync, and make sure it's set at "Off by default," not "Always Off" or "On by default."

When you play Half-Life, if you have a console, type cl_showfps 1 in the console. If the number in the upper left hand corner of the screen is around 72 FPS (I don't think it will be), you can type fps_max 100 in the console to get the maximum FPS, frames per second, possible.

I hope this helps you.

Thanks a lot!

My FPS is now 20-50 and my games are WAY faster and it is a lot easier to kill! Thanks!

By the way, when I did fps_max 100 and did cl_showfps 1, it showed 99 on the top, lol.

Posted by: Dabom

Good to hear.

Half-Life limits the FPS at 100, so you're maxed out. What is your average FPS then? Is it around 50, or at 99?

In the game, it is 20-60 depending on the situation
