Modem BNet Problems

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I use two different computers using two different ISPs.

Problem: Modem disconnects or fails during battle.net connection process, or shortly after.

Computer #1; uses Qwest/MSN, and the specs are:
OS: Windows 98
Processor: Pentium III 500MHz
Video Card: NVIDIA RIVA TNT2/TNT2 PRO
Sound Card: SB Live! Value
128 MB RAM
Modem: 56k U.S. Robotics Voice Win

I also tried AOL 4.0 on that computer, for the same effect; my modem kicks off and I lose connection to battle.net, all within no more than a minute.

Computer #2; uses AOL 7.0:
OS: Windows XP
Processor: AMD Athlon 1.4GHz
Video Card: GeForce (not quite sure what model)
256 MB RAM
Modem: GenericSoft 56k

Computer #2, the XP computer with AOL 7.0 can connect, although sometimes it takes several tries and reboots, along with much frustration after AOL loses connection multiple times. Once a connection to battle.net is established, there are generally no further problems; the connection tends to be stable.

Computer #1, whether using Qwest/MSN or AOL 4.0, can often connect...but shortly after establishing a connection, the modem kicks off.

Verifiably, on Computer #1, the modem kicks off not only with Diablo II BNet, but with Starsiege Tribes, and most likely other games as well.

Strangely enough, only a week or two ago, I was able to connect to battle.net for extended periods of time on Computer #1 through Qwest.

Any help would be immensely appreciated.

As an update to the situation on Computer #1, I have determined that my modem kicks off shortly after playing any fullscreen game.

This seems to hint at problems with the video card; perhaps the Direct Draw or Direct3D--the kind that makes the screen "click," if you understand what I'm referring to.

unless youve changed something since your connections were stable, id say you have a piece of failing hardware. whether its the modem itself or the video card, youll have to test.

Ack, failing hardware? But if this is the true problem, why would it be occuring on both the old and new systems?

Can anyone else provide a possible solution, or at least devise the possible nature of the problem?

i was just refering to computer 1, which you said suddenly started acting up. again, if youve installed any software or drivers, those could be the issue.

Yes, Computer #1 is acting up, all of a sudden.

It COULD be just that Qwest was recently assimilated by MSN, and right now I could be experiencing unstable connections.

That it doesn't work with AOL could just be because I used 4.0; Tweaker has posted multiple times that you must use the most recent version of AOL.

All this suggests that my problem could be sore luck, and bad circumstances.

Either that, or my hardware wore out, as redwench suggested.

I'd still like to hear the insight of any who read this thread; meanwhile, I'll be downloading AOL 7.0 to see if that works better.
