Poor support for Xbox could lead to trouble for Microsoft

CNN.com has the skinny on what could possibly be a problem for Microsoft in the support of Xbox's with defects. Here's a snippet from the article:

Hundreds of people who bought Microsoft's hot new Xbox game console over the holidays received defective systems, and some say they waited for weeks before the devices were fixed.

Analysts said the number of flawed consoles is probably too small to spell serious production troubles, but said long repair times wouldn't help the software giant in its first major foray into hardware.

I would post on this, but I dont feel like getting flamed tonight...

It's the same with any other console.

When my PS2 died it took a month to get a fixed version.

Breaking my previous post(I cant help myself!),

This has happened on the other consoles(I dunno about GC, havent heard anything about those) but with the xbox, they are not working right out of the box. I have a screen of the message, but this part of the forums dont allow attachments(I guess?). The screen comes up on these xbox's when they are first turned on and does not go away, the power light also turns red.

Now, about the PS2 problems:

I personally think that the stickers that Blockbuster Video and other rental stores use on their DVD and CD game discs are the cause of these "Disc Read Errors". I remember Hollywood video used to use those and when I rented Oni for PS2 back in January, when I played that game the disc was loud and sounded terrible. I immidately quit renting games until they removed those stickers, which they later did. Blockbuster still has not removed them, which is one of the reasons I do not rent from them. The Sticker causes the disc to go out of alignment, making the drive have to work harder. The motor that moves the lens goes past a breaking point and causes the belt that controls the lens to "loosen" and therefore unable to read anything or somethings inproperly. There are fixes all over the net for the problem that save you the money and time of sending your PS2 to sony, if its out of warranty.
These stickers may not be 100% responsible for the problem, but is definitely a cause if a persons ps2 no longer works and they have rented games or DVD's with those stickers. I have heard of people that have called blockbuster to tell them that their rentals have ruined their electronics and blockbuster just denies and denies. Sooner or later this is gonna catch up and bite them on the A$$. I have a launch PS2 and have never ever had an error on it.

Nova, since you are used to being around computers and all that, you obviously know how to take care of your stuff therefore making another factor in place of "Improper care/use" that caused your ps2 to break. If you rented games from BB, I would be interested to know about it. A lot of people do not know how to take care of their stuff, especially electronics, some people have them on carpeted floors!

I don't rent games.

And there was a high percentage of defective PS2 at launch. Especially in europe.

Do a search, you'll find the info. I'm too lazy.

Every single piece of consumer electronics ever made has a failure rate. That means, there is a percentage of consumer electronics that just don't work. It is the same for everything, be it a tv, a fridge, or your home console.

The only reason why it seems (keyword: seems in case you didn't catch the bold) like the xbox had a high failure rate, is because unlike most consumer electronics, where people just take it back and get a replacement, people buying the xbox wanted microsoft to fail, and made it extremely vocal.

Last time I bought a piece of electronics that didn't work, I didn't go stand on a ****ing mountain and yell it out for the world to hear. I took it back, got a replacement, the end.

Oh I didnt know you had a launch PS2. I was kinda addressing the newer ps2's since some people are having problems with them.

On my Gateway P3 Machine that I bought about 3 years ago, within about 6 months to a year the powersupply fan started making loud noises, sounded like a Disel Truck. Gateway came and replaced it with the same brand, tested it at my house, worked fine. A month later it did it again. This time I was mad, so I griped to them about it and that the brand or series they were using had to be defective. Gateway came and replaced it again, but this time with a different brand of Power Supply. It never happened again. Later I found out that the kind that I originally had in it had a manufacturers ball bearing error. I dont know how mainstream that got though.

Like Nova said, some people go to the extreme to complain about something. I didnt get on the net when my Power Supply screwed up the second time and spread "DONT BUY FROM GATEWAY! LEMONS!" because I griped to them about it(coincedentally the fan on the vid card in that pc went out about 1 1/2 years after I had it, thank god for extended warranty!)

I dont know why the ps2 problems didnt get a story on them, go look at a Sony PS2 message board, lots of "Disc Read Error Problem" posts.

I don't have a launch PS2.

I was just saying that there were a lot of PS2s that were DOA at launch. Same as the XBox. Same as any consumer electronics.

Oops, I misread your post. "I dont rent games" and "Defective PS2 at Launch" got garbled up in my head.

If its 1% like they said, i would say the launch was pretty successful then. Like Nova said, the reason why this is even making news is because its microsoft, and there are a certain number of people out there that would like ti see them fall on their face in the game console market(as well as other places) Customer service sucks period. I bought a cell phone from At&t...defective... wouldnt program, sent it back cancelled my service. Took me three months to cancel my service, I cancelled it every month but still got billed.

Game consoles are a new part of Microsoft, it will take them time to iron out wrinkles period. How often do you see companies get everything right, the first time, and the ability to satisfy every single consumer that buys their product (especially on the scale that the xbox is)? I think this article stems from an anti microsoft sentiment.....

one of the other big deals is that a defective product is usually replaced, and repaired upon return. you usually dont find a company making you wait for repairs if you return an item for being doa.

The failure percentages do not look too bad but do supply ammo to the MS hunters. Shoot straight!

As to what you say Red - A lot of the retailers are placing a short time limit on doa replacements unless you buy an extra warranty. Christmas is perfect for this scenerio. Purchased in advance, past time limit, doa when opened, sorry - no exchange, sent for repair.

I take it back because "I don't want it" , ask for store credit, credit issued, inform sales person that item is dead, go get another.

i think its a lot of BS myself. ive had trouble with several things ive gotten from MS and have had no problem getting them replaced. from defective windows CDs to failed or broken keyboards. MS has even replaced a worn out keyboard with nothing more than me emailing and asking how to exchange one they sent me a brand new one via UPS without having to return the old one same for mice. i fail to see how they would do much less for Xbox. I think that most people who are complaining about "their" xbox not getting replaced dont even own one. especially if it is broke out of the box most electronic stores have a 30 day return policy the rest have a 15 day. if someone is too stupid not to pack the thing back up in the original box grab the receipt and return it to the store then they are hardly smart enough to be allowed to breathe. same goes for PS2 launch owners that had problems. all it takes is to go back to the store and get a replacement or refund if ur disatisfied.
