Direct X problem

I have just reinstalled win98 and amhaving some direct X problems.
Everything I try to run says that I need to install direct x.
I have installed DX8 and go to the diag screen for DX and everything checks out fine, yet it still says I need to install DX.
I have updated my Vid drivers (Nvidia Geforce 2) and still no go.
Any help suggestions would be great.
I have already reinstalled Win98.
Everything works fine under XP.

What programs are you trying to run?

You can try grabbing DirectX 8.1 here.
