updating Microsoft word to 2002

My sister asked me this question and I thought I would come here for a definative answer, my gut reaction is that is will work.
If you have installed office 2000 on your computer (MS word, Excell and the like) can you then go out and buy a word upgrade to word2002 and install it, or must you go out an buy an update to office 2002 (if they even sell one).

I believe seperate product updates would work ... I once installed Microsoft Office Pro 97, then upgraded Access 97 to Access 2000 ... no problems encountered, except for the product updates - some of which couldn't be installed because it required the full suite...
