I have an old computer that I gave to my daughter .. it is a 486 233 with 64r

Just got it back from her to remove her HD and replace it with a secondary I had . it is a western digital 10G.

No matter what I do it wil not load Windows 98! Well it will load but stalls when I get to the restart part. I even had a friend bring over a win98 UPdate cd,,, to run over the 95 but SAME thing happened?? (It had 98 on it before I reformatted to start over for her)

I can get 95 on no problem ..... any ideas here?

One other question ...... While working on it all of a sudden it asked me to reset my clock ..... time and date were both wrong .. Im wondering if that is because we reformatted or is it possible that it may be cmos battery?

Did you try taking the 10GB drive out?
A 486 can't possibly handle a drive that big.

EDIT: Wait a minute...a 486 233?
Wouldn't that be a P1? 486 doesn't go beyond 100MHz.

Actually it is a P2 ...... been so long since It has been mine...... a P2 yes

important to note here is that I have a 3G that I dropped in there just to check ..IT (W98) WOULD NOT work on there either?

Need some more details about your system. If it's a 486DX2 -33Mhz, then it is below the minimum required CPU for Windows 98.

If it's a Pentium 1 233Mhz, then post your make and model of motherboard. You may need a BIOS update for it to work properly under 98 with that hard drive. You may even need a third party hard drive utility or a PCI ATA controller as well.

Okay will get the #'s ... thing is when I had it before (it was mine) .. i ran 98 on it no problem ....... !!

64 mem

does this help? Sure hope so And thanks

That's a p1

Since win98 doesn't run on that other comp either anymore, are you sure your win98 cd isn't scratched or something?

Okay I think i have sent out conflicting statements ... NOT a shocker all things considered.

The 98 disk does work on my present computer .... but I thought the same thing you did .... that possibly it was the CD ...... so I uploaded 95 on the one im working on and then used a 98 update cd ..... the computer would NOT take that either.... totally different cd ..... same problem .....

NOW what say ye?
