Toshiba Developes Breakthrough Optical Storage Technology

Toshiba has created a disk which can hold 30gb and most likely much, much more:

Toshiba Corp. has developed a new rewritable optical disc with a capacity of 30GB per-layer, per-side and a companion read/write optical head that incorporates a blue laser, the company announced today. These new products will be publicly unveiled at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, which begins on Jan. 8.

The disk is 12cm in diameter (current normal CD size), is written and read with a laser that has a smaller wavelength, and is also rewritable. Since multiple layers are possible on the discs, expect to see very high capacity cds. Read more here at ComputerWorld and Toshiba's press release here.
