a friend of mine got himself a new pc( athlon 1.4). He has a new printer(epson) and a scanner(don't know which type?). How can he connect both to the pc??, when there is only one port in rear of scanner and one port in rear of hard drive??. I have serial ports, so i just plugged my printer in the scanner then into the hd.
Please help him?? and me( i'm new to this usb crack.)

Ok, You have your printer daisy chained to your scanner via the parallel port or, as a lot of people like to call it, the printer port. It is not serial as you mention (just for your info).

Your friend has USB. It is very easy to attach USB peripherals to your computer. Now, if either the printer and/or scanner is USB, then just attach them to a free USB socket in the back of the computer. Likewise, you can buy a USB hub that contains 4 USB sockets. These are usually powered which is important because most USB peripherals take their power from the USB port. If you hook too many devices to an unpowered USB hub, then it won't run because they will all require power...power they won't get if its overloaded.

Now, if one of the devices is parallel, your friend can hook up either his printer or scanner to it (depending on which one is parallel). Most new printers give you the option of either hooking it up to a parallel port or a USB port. Many newer ones just give you a USB port and that is it.

Just a word of caution though, many printers are a little picky about how they connect to USB. Some require that you install the drivers first and then plug in the printer to the USB. Just read the docs that came with the hardware.

I have 2 inkjets and a scanner hooked up to the USB on my computer. I like USB because these devices are hot swapable, meaning that you need not turn your computer off every time you want to unplug and/or plug in a new device. The computer should automatically detect a USB attached device the moment you plug it into the computer's USB port or Hub. Likewise, you can have many devices hooked up to USB.

If you want more information, I would suggest you read this helpful frequently asked questions on USB here.
