Microsoft Caught in On-Line Poll Rigging

In a rather feeble attempt to boost acceptance of their up-coming .NET strategy, Microsoft was recently caught rigging a poll started by UK ZDNet. The poll, which asked users which web services they planned to have running by the end of 2002, showed a curious and more than significant shift in favor of Microsoft. Logs showed that a tremendous volume of votes came from within the Microsoft domain, with one individual from that domain actually attempting to vote 228 times. ZDNet UK can tell you the rest.
In December, Java was more popular than .Net for building Web services, according to a ZDNet UK poll, but weeks later the position had dramatically reversed; investigation revealed just what lengths Microsoft will go to to promote its products. Microsoft's .Net Web services technology appeared to experience a sudden massive boost in popularity over its rival Java, according to a poll run by ZDNet UK.
By 21 December, more than two-thirds of the respondents (69.5 percent), said they planned to deliver some applications by Web services by the end of 2002, with a large majority of those (nearly half the total sample) planning to use Java. Only 21.5 percent said they planned to use Microsoft .Net -- less than the figure (23.5 percent) planning to use neither.
But by the time the poll closed, on 5 January, the position had dramatically changed, with three quarters of voters claiming to be implementing .Net. This apparent sudden change of heart over the Christmas period appears to be the result of a concerted campaign within Microsoft.
There were only 1,415 votes TOTAL. This wasn't exactly a high profile poll of web developers around the world. Rather than some big, devious master plan by the Devil himself, it could have been something as simple as a bunch of Microsoft programmers went out to lunch, and someone mentioned the poll. They all got back and voted for .NET to support their company and told their coworkers to do the same. Then a couple wisecracks out of the group decided to "Get smart" and vote several times.
If this was really a hand-crafted plan by Bill to increase profits, I think they'd be smart enough to have people vote from home rather than the microsoft.com domain, or at least to rig a more prominent poll.
