so i got d2, and i install it. and then when it tries to run the video test, instead of flashing a couple of times and then continuing, the screen goes black, and the computer locks up tight and wont respond to anything short of a sledge hammer..... what do i do?
spes:
pentium 3 processor
248Mb RAM
16.4 Gb free hard drive
motherboard, says <<fX, whatever the hell that is
videocard: Trident yberblade Ai1 AGP (8 Mb)
windows me operating system.
i know that the manual doesnt list windows me as being a compatible op system, but i have friends who can get their windows me to work just fine.

I think the culprit is your video card ... either it can't handle Diablo II (even though the "minimum" requirement is an 8MB video card), or the drivers are outdated, and you need to download the latest video drivers...
Either way, I would strongly suggest that you upgrade your video card before you play Diablo II - at least get a cheap GeForce2 MX or an ATI Rage 128 ... with a marginal video card like yours, it might be a very sluggish playing experience for you...
Stick around for more suggestions...

Agreed. Your issue is surrounding video performance. The board itself/drivers/direct x.
As Canis Lupus recommended, get yourself a new video card. Even if newer drivers do allow you to run, it's not going to be a pleasant gaming experience even in Direct Draw mode.

thanks guys, i figured as much, just wanted to see what others thought too. the thing is that i have had it installed on this computer before, and it ran, but i reinstalled after i restored my computer to the factory settings, and now it freezes.

One more thing.... I have a laptop that takes those little pc cards, where can i find video mini pc cards for the computer?

installed updated driver for video card, it started! however, it would freeze up when i started the first quest. so i installed the updated driver for the sound card, it works like a charm. exept on battlenet, still kindof slow, think its the connection speed, hopefully dsl will fix that.
