Simple Networking, stupid but necessary

Ok, I've got two rigs here and I need them to share a connection. Now, I know what you're going to say, Why they hell would you want to share a connection on a 26.4. Well, I can think of a few reasons, but one is because I want a network that can play MP games with the two systems. Also, I want to use the USR modem sitting in my old P3 450 rig, but I lack ISA slots.. Now what are my current options?
I have no ethernet cards or the sort. Though I could purchase them if I must.
Things I would use:
1. A Serial Network ? I don't know anything about them.
2. USB Networking, sounds like a pain, what would I need?
3. Any other networking? A.k.a. Direct Cable Connection.
Now here is what I need the sharing to do.
I must share a printer, a modem connection of 26,400bps, and have enough bandwidth between the two system, to run a LAN capable of playing multiplayer games between the two systems. I don't need ultra low pings, just something that I can run a smooth lag free game upon.
Now, I don't have ethernet cards, nor do I really want to have to buy them, but I will if it's my only option.
Here's the information I need.
What can I use? What would be the best idea for what I need. Is sharing a Modem Connection actually possible? What in all hardware would I have to have to run such a setup?
Thanks beforehand, AoD

The cheapest, but by no means, the simplest answer, would be to plug anethernet card into each computer, and a hub inbetween, a network, and set it for internet, file, and print sharing.
Theres also several other ways you could do this, if you had say 3 computers, you could stick 3 ethernet cards in the main computer, one in the two sub computers, hook them all up to the main, and use the extra to hook to a modem. Certain software or special settings would be needed for this though.

Since a USB networking kit would be as much as a pair of LAN cards, I would get 2 Ethernet cards. They're only like 15$ a piece. Grab 2 and a cable and then convert the cable into a crossover cable so you don't need a hub.
An IPX cable may work well enough, but i'm not sure it would work with ICS and the transfer speed blows compared to 100BaseT.

two ethernet 10baseT cards can cost like 9-15$ and a crossover cable no hub needed if its just two comps. any puter with 98SE or better can internet share which if ur using a modem is probbably the best method.

Well, how would I setup an ethernet lan without a hub? What all would I need?
And a serial direct cable connection won't hold it?

Serial connections are slow and by their design, I don't think ICS will work with them but i'm not 100% sure. A pair of Ethernet cards will give you a fast network and excellent LAN gaming performance. It's worth 30$ if you're planning on gaming a lot or sharing files occasionally.

Well, it all depends when I can fork up the money for it. What would the connection be like if the old rig with the USR connected and Idles while my new comp uses the network, would it still be like having a 26.4 ?

I'm not sure if there is a decrease in available bandwidth but if there is, it's very little. I notice no difference now or even when I had ICS setup when I was on dial-up before.

This is what I originally did, but then upgraded the hub for a Linksys router. However, I found this to be a cost effective way of networking for the beginner.

And read some users reports on the kit at Epinions.

hubless networking can only network two comps at a time. using a crossover cable eliminates the need for a hub in a two computer network. ICS doesnt work with serial conections neither does printer sharing. serial connection is merely for file transfers and is very slow. u can do USB but the cost of equipment for USB is slightly more than for a pair of NIC cards and cable. If u get a pair of NIC u can always add in a hub or switch later if u want more than two comps on the network. Im sure someone here can point u to a site that has step by step for setting up a network.

Well, I've measured it, and I'll need approx. a 27ft crossover cable, and the only ones I can get here are 10ft. So, I'll have to construct one ^^
Now as for this Etherenet is where I'd do the best with? I hope that's right so I can kick some ass on a mini lan party with the GF and a few friends
