Abit/Fic/Asus Motherboards

I am going to put myself together a new system. Since I am what you call poor I am building a system that will not be that expensive. I am going to use a Duron 1ghz, 1.1ghz or 1.2ghz.
The problem is that I am not sure what Motherboard to get. I have seen 3 that are in a nice price range...
Abit KT7A-comp-u-plus.com
Asus A7a133
Fic AZ11E
Those are the 3 I have been looking at, and I want to know which one I should get. I have heard that VIA mobos can't handle certain kinds of RAM or it is fussy and can't mix models, does that cause a problem?
Is there anything else I need to know?

Well, the Abit board is solid, I know a bunch of people who have them.
The asus board I'm not sure about, but most people consider asus to be pretty high quality.
FIC is known for making buggy boards, so I'd avoid them if I were you.
You'll probably want to go with the asus board, though, because Abit boards tend to be more expensive.
If you get a board, make sure to get one without raid. It's a cost you don't really want to waste money on.

Well the ABIT board is only $9 more then the ASUS board. If the ABIT board is that much better I would pay the $9.

I would not touch the FIC at all. Both Abit and Asus make solid boards. I would honestly go for the Abit board in this case though.

FIC is junk and the Asus board uses an Ali chipset, also junk.
Get the Abit.

I think FIC gets a bad rap. So far i have had experience with 2 FIC boards, both of them worked fine. They didn't lockup or bluescreen that i knew of. Yeah, FIC may not be an overclockers board, though i have sucessfully oc'd mine, but it is a goos stable board if that is all yopu want. Besides they are a lot cheaper than other boards.
The only thing i really don't like is the positioning of the p supply connector

oh i would still get the asus board, cheaper than the abit board and minorly more expensicve than the FIC

The Abit board looks good to me.
On the issue of FIC, their main problem is they tend to release boards too early to get into the market before anyone else with a new chipset. They had the first K6-2 and Athlon motheboards with the VIA chipsets. Both models were close to 50% RMA's. I suffered through 2 revisions of the FIC PA2013 and neither ever worked right. You could get it to work, but it would always end up with registry errors no matter the memory config.
Their boards also tend to have less capacitors and other voltage regulation components. Which is why they cost less to make.
The one place you should never skimp on is the motherboard. It's the heart of the system.
