Solaris 9 Will Not Support Intel Processors

Sun will stop supporting the x86 Intel chip architecture in it's latest Solaris release. It appears that they are having some trouble in the revenue department:

Sun Microsystems Tuesday said it will not support chips from Intel with the release of its Solaris 9 operating system this year, as the hardware maker looks to cut costs in a tough economic climate.

...Sun decided the costs of support, such as bug tracking and software patches, for Solaris 9 running on Intel was not worth the cost to the company.

The article goes on to report that 1.2 million Solaris 8 licenses for Intel based machines, and that they're may be support for Intel chips in Solaris 9 if things look up (although I wouldn't count on it too soon). NetworkWorldFusion and The Register have the story.

Stupid management decision. Not an engineering decision.

I would think that bug tracking for multiple architectures would make their OS more robust.

it would make their OS more marketable. but the question is what is their ratio of x86 chip based sales to the other sales. this isnt a good move for solaris it is not a smart way to cut costs. the last thing that should ever be done is restrict ur product lines. they should first off stop spending as much money on flying their senior management around for 4 month all expense paid vacations to where ever....
