Have an issue with the mother board.
Compaq had no idea as to what it was so thought I would ask you guys. More of my questions have been answered here than any place!
Computer: AMDK6 500mhz
memory: 312 mb
system: win98
problem: System board extension for ACPI BIOS in device manager reads: This device is causing a resource conflict (Code 15)
I look in the resources and is says No conflicts.
Should I be conserned with it?
I didn't have the problem until updated my BIOS over the net. The computer seems to work ok. Have a few lock-ups now and then most of the problems I have are with my kids games I think they were writen for older systems.
Thanks for your help

I'm not sure what BIOS options you get with a Compaq motherboard, but there should be some setting that loads your system defaults. Whenever a BIOS update causes a problem or doesn't behave correctly, the following steps may help:
1. Select "Reset configuration Data" in BIOS. (If you have this option.)
2. Load system and setup defaults and then input the settings for your hardware. Make a note of your settings before you do this so you know what to change them to.
3. Soimetimes You have to clear the CMOS with a jumper on the motherboard. Refer to your manual for this procedure if your motherboard has this type of jumper on it.
Another issue that could be causing that error is another peripheral that has its own BIOS. An IDE controller is one such example.
Before we dive any deeper into it, post back with your system specs including OS, chipset, and any PCI cards you have. New chipset drivers may be all you need.

I work with Compaq computers a lot.
It's sounds like the old BIOS did not support ACPI.
You installed Windows on that old BIOS. So, Windows doesn't think the BIOS supports ACPI.
You just updated to a BIOS that does support ACPI.
Now Windows is confused because of Plug and Play detection at startup.
It won't hurt anything to leave it the way it is. The next time you reinstall Windows, the problem should be gone.

Ok! That makes a lot of sense. I was only conserned because of the error didn't want it to jam up the computer.
Do you think I can run install again without reformating the computer?
I haven't changed the WIN 98 since I purchased the computer and the only version I have is the restore disk's that came with the computer! Didn't realy want to go through and clean out all the COMPAQ stuff again!

You will need to perform a fresh install to overwrite the system files.
You will lose all of your applications and settings anyway, so it's best to reformat.
I'd recommend you don't "fix" it unless you have some other reason to reinstall.

No dont have any reason to fix it as long as it dosn't cause a problem. Picked up a new video card for the computer hope it will speed things up. Will have to see if the instalation goes ok or not! Never seems to go easy when I add somthing to this computer!

Wargy is correct, but in another post down the board tweaker gave a link to a site that tells you about your startup files, you can safely delete all green and almost all yellow on that link, here is the link
Go here http://ww2.whidbey.net/djdenham/Uncheck.htm
it will explain what each prog is.

i would first try deleting the driver from system devices that says it is having a a problem reboot and see if windows will redetect and fix it. failing that u got a lot of good suggestions.
