AVR Failure

I have a problem. I keep getting an avr initialization failure whenever I use piece of hardware I have plugged into my printer port. When I take it to a friends, it works perfectly! I have had the port itself checked (twice) and both were ok.
I'm both confused and mad!!!
The program that comes with the hardware works on my friends comp so thats not it.
Can anyone tell me what an avr failure is, and how to solve it?
I have an Intel 810e video card
pentium III 647Mhz processor
windows 98 english 4.10
Ess Allegro PCI Audio
320 Mb memory
I have gone into BIOS and set the port to EEP, the input/output matches.
I'm at a loss...
please help

This almost sounds like a joke.
Why didn't you identify this mysterious piece of hardware? What about the software you are trying to use?
The closest thing I can think of is "Automatic Voltage Regulator" failure.

I'm with Kane. I would say that's what avr means in this case.
It could be you have a bad parellel port, or somekind of incompatability between your motherboard and whateveritis. Have you tried other port settings like ECP+EPP? Did you also assign a free DMA channel to the parellel port?
Also, try DMA channel 3 for it in BIOS as well.
You also might check the support page of the manufacturer of whateveritis. They may have an updated driver that adresses your problem. It may only affect certain systems.

No, its no joke. AVR, not really too sure what that means, but it the settings in the sat system card(the mysterious device) calls for either an AVR or Blocker, AVR in my case.
How do you set a free DMA channel to a parallel port? and where in BIOS can I set DMA to 3?

It should have the DMA select right below where you pick ECP+EPP. Check your parellel port settings in the device manager. It should show an aassigned DMA channel.
Is that a card for Satellite Internet? If so, considering the nature of Satellite, it may need some sort of stable voltage input such as from an Uninterruptible power supply for it to function properly or for it's protection from lightning surges.
You might check out the website of the Satellite card dealer. This may be a common issue on some system setups and they may have a work around for it. If you have trouble finding anything about it, tell us more about the card and who manufactures it and we'll try and help you search for more info.

I found it! No good answer for you.
Atmel makes the AVR 8-Bit RISC Microcontroller.
The printer port is normally used for programming the microcontroller from your PC.
People use these things for a variety of reasons including embedded processors, control systems, conveyors, etc...
They are also used for hacking satellite, cable and other systems. Oh, my!
Mike2001, you may need to go back to the vendor that sold you the kit. This is a very esoteric subject. Do a search for "AVR" and "microcontrollers" on the web to obtain further help.
