its been awhile since if been here but now im back .. andi got some ??? .. y do i get so such frame rates on some games when i got a good video card 256 mb .. and a ok processor ... its ince to be back =D

Well, what type of Video card do you have, and what processor do you have?

What games are running slow framerates?

First and foremost, one of the most important things in framerates is the drivers.

Make sure you have the latest drivers for all of your systems components. Then, make sure you have the latest Direct X.

Actually, drivers mean very little for framerates.

Framerates are mostly dependant on video card if you have a fast processor, and if not a fast processor, then the cpu can be an issue.

Well, if you have really old drivers, you're going to get poor framerates.

turn off anti aliasing... set game to lower resolution, lower color depth, turn off the extra gee-whiz features in the games you play...etc etc.

I have to agree with AoD - drivers can often mean a lot to framerates, altho it is not always ... I remember Anandtech and FiringSquad doing some benchmarks on the GeForce2 Ultra last year, and saw a framerate difference of 10-25 fps on the same video card using different drivers...

And there's also the case of driver optimization for 3dnow and SSE2 ... some drivers are optimized and some are not

Yeah Laggy, specially with new updates and crap. New software usually means faster operation, unless we're talking about microsoft.

well ... its a 32 mb radeon video cad .. the lastest driver .. and its 533 mhz intel celeron processor ... and the games r empire earth .... i get bout 15 fps on big battles ... and on tribes2 when ever theres alot of ppl in games .. i gret bout18 fps

I've never played the game, but if it supports OpenGL, enable it. Try Direct3D, too, and find out which one works better (if either are usable).

Both of those problems are not video card dependant. Sounds more like you need more RAM.

Tribes 2 used to run like crap on my 900 system when I was running a Radeon. I upped the RAm to 512 and it worked great. I don't play T2 anymore though.

As for Empire Earth, if it's like any other RTS the more units and buildings you have going the more RAM it eats. I've had huge Starcraft battles on my dual 1.3 AMD box that has a gig of RAM that still would chug out.

How much memory are you running?

Posted by: Outlaw

StarCraft will NEVER use 1 gig of RAM, it probably won't even come close to 512.

If it was a network game than there was probably just too much going on at the same time and it started lagging, if it was single player then your PC is too slow or the game is poorly programmed, which seems to happen alot lately. *coughdiablo2cough*

Yeah that is a bad example, I didn't think of that. It was on an 8 player game here on my LAN.

Total Annihilation used to chop on my 900 with 512MB. If I alt+tab out it was using around 470MBs of it. I haven't played that in a long time though.

Well, in my honest opinion, I'd have to say that's the processor. I just recently upgraded from a P3 450Mhz to an AMD XP 1700+ and boy did I see one hell of a performance gain.. Also, you are running a 66Mhz FSB with that 533, that's another slowdown.

The best option would be to first, give us your motherboards model and see if that could use a change, and also, get a P3 system in the works if your Mobo can take a 100 or 133Mhz FSB and run AGP 4x.

Though, the drivers are the first and foremost important thing to try. It's free and takes nothing but some time to download and install.

As for the RAM? Doubtful, since most games do not need anything more than 128 to run smoothly, heck even Diablo 2 can run rather smoothly on my P3 rig with only 128mb on deck. But, it's another cheap solution you could try...

But in my honest opinion, I'd have to say, you'd be better off with upgrading that system to something a bit more, powerful.

Now say your motherboard supports AGP 4x and can run a 133Mhz FSB. All you would really have to do to see a decent performance gain would be to slap a P3 700Mhz or faster. But from experience, those ATi Radeon cards aren't that fast and you'd be better off slapping a nVidia GeForce 2 or GeForce 3 into it. I recently bought a GeForce 2 MX400 for only 100 dollars and it performs nicely, and it even did alot compared to the Voodoo 3 that was in the P3 rig I had. The P3 and GF2MX rig was a nice one, but still I lacked the awesome framerates I have now. So, in my opinion, it would be more the CPU's fault than the video card. And as for RAM concerns, I've played every game I have, even Diablo 2 on this machine, and not one has stuttered, and I only have 256MB of DDR.

actaully its a 100 bus =D

Posted by: TotalRecall

I run Empire Earth on a 911 MHz PIII, 640 MB RAM, and a GeForce2 GTS 32mb at 1600x1200:16bit with all the options at max (Direct3D mode).

I get around 20-25 FPS. I've noticed that the 1024x768 resolution isn't much better, with FPS rates around 35. Both are fine for a RTS, though.

PS: Raynor, me and Chako are looking for another OTSer who plays Empire Earth. Private Message me if you are up for some games. This applies to anyone else here, also.

Can't be. 533celerons never supported 100mhz bus speeds. Your motherboard may be capable of 100mhz bus, but your chip isn't.

Also, Canis, AOD, those 'FPS gains of 25fps' are on things like quake, where you are already getting 200fps.

Different drivers will rarely give more than a 5% speed difference, which to most people is completely unnoticeable.

Well, unnoticable or noticable, they are the first way of making sure that you have the latest performance cranking out of your system.

Now let's take for example you have, 6 newer versions of drivers before the your cards drivers that are isntalled. Say average you gain a 2% speed difference per driver set. That's going to make one helluva difference compared to constantly upgrading you drivers.
