This problem's only been encountered when I tried to set up a LAN game...
I've been trying to set up a LAN game at home, on two computers sitting right next to each other. We currently do not have internet access, but can file/print share. Tried to set up Internet Connection Sharing (w/ PPPoE) over the weekend and now we get no connection , so we decided to try a LAN game to take out the ICS frustrations on...
One computer seems to be able to host a game (and assumingly join) without a problem, it's specs follow:
1ghz AMD Anthlon
512MB RAM
monstersound 400mx (i think)
Nvidia GForce2 GTS (32MB)
win98SE
My computer is the one that gets the error message :
Diablo II Error
Halt
Location: D2Net\SRC\Client.cpp#108
Expression: Socket
The error message occurs after you select your character - at the screen where it should show loading and that little red bar, instead it boots you out of the game and shows the message.
It's specs are:
750mhz AMD Anthlon
512MB RAM
onboard sound
Nvidia GForce2 GTS (32MB)
win98SE
I've tried manually assigning IPs already. That didn't help, and it seemed to screw up file/print sharing (the computers could no longer see each other in Network Neighborhood, even tho their workgroups had not been changed). I don't have the info on the network cards we're using with me at work, so I'll have to post them tomorrow. The brands are Linksys, Realtek, and Kingston (3 needed for ICS)...but I don't know they're model #s.
I would appreciate any help that would allow us both to play together...we got two computers so we could game online together only to discover that ICS with PPPoE is a pain-in-the-____ to set up (i'm no computer wiz, i just keep trying to plug away at the problem...sadly with no browsing capacity at the moment, it means troubleshooting from work and trying out what i find when i get home and keeping notes on what did and didn't work...).

You mentioned you didn't have internet access - was this before or after you set up ICS? (sorry if the question appears condescending, but we have to make sure we have all bases covered, sicne ICS requires an internet connection to actually work) ... do you use cable or DSL as your internet connection in setting up ICS?
Give us more details and we'll try to nail down the problem for you...

I had internet access prior to attempting to set up ICS. It is DSL, w/ PPPoE, thus using a "virtual adapter" even tho an adapter is really present... (which is why setting up ICS is such a pain)
so we have the two computers, each with a network card, each plugged into a hub via the network card...and the DSL modem attached to the uplink port of the hub.
the 3rd network card isn't really necessary i found out, unless you are hooking up the two computers directly (w/o the hub - thus one network card on each computer used to attach the computers to each other, and a second card on the host computer to attach to the dsl modem). however, that type of direct link requires cross-over ethernet cable, and all mine is straight-thru, so i used the hub and two cards instead. i've been using instrurctions at this site to set up ICS w/DSL using PPPoE: www.carricksolutions.com
the guy is very helpful, but i haven't been able to get it to work, and may just try reinstalling win98SE and starting from scratch *pulls hair out* or investing in a router....

another thing too, forgot to mention (this is more a problem with my internet connection than with the diablo question, so anyone out there with ICS experience...) even after uninstalling ICS and uninstalling and reinstalling the software (Enternet 300 v1.4) used to connect to the DSL server, one of the computers appears to get a connection, but the browser gets the "cannot find server or DNS error" message, and the other computer (host) can connect but the diagnostic thats a part of Enternet shows the connection timing out. (since its a dial-connection, only one computer at a time can try to dial and connect the server - that's why ICS is needed)
prior to installing ICS, either computer could connect to the internet, just not at the same time. they both can dial in, but have issues after that.

Make sure you got the same version of the game on both computers. If one connected to battle.net, it was probably updated.

Well, I would strongly recommend a router ... ICS is pretty dicey, and since it's a software solution rather than a full-fledged hardware solution, it's open to all sorts of bugs.
When I set up ICS in my machine years ago, I had three network cards - two installed on the host machine, and one installed on the client. One network card on the host machine connects to the internet connection, while the remaining two cards connect to each other (it's how the host machine shares its connection with the client).
Now, having two network cards in a Windows machine is always a risky proposition. Network cards are notorious for insisting on sharing IRQs with other hardware, so two of em in a system is ... well ....
A router (like Linksys or Dlink) will simplify everything, since all you need are two network cards (one for each machine), and both of them hook up to the router, which connects to the internet connection. The advantage of this is that any of the computers can connect to the internet even if one of them is off (something you can't do with ICS, since the client computer will lose its internet connection if the host is off).
Now your solution to have 2 network cards connected to a hub is also supposed to work, unless your ISP uses a registered MAC Address in providing connection. The number is found on the network card or the hub. Of course, since it's DSL, this may not be the case (just decided to bring it up just in case, coz my cable provider uses MAC addresses on my router to supply internet connection).
In any case, you may try to start from scratch - not reinstall Windows 98 but to remove your network cards from the Device Manager and try reinstalling the drivers, then follow the network configurations for each.
If all else fails, I go back to my original recommendation - get a router, and make it easier on yourself...

sadly, I've uninstalled and reinstalled the cards and their drivers a few times already, and that didn't fix the prob - last time I attempted ICS the same thing happened (and told myself to never do it again....i shoulda listened to myself)...and reinstalling windows w/o ICS at least got the browser working again (unless anyone knows how to uninstall and reinstall IE v5 w/o formatting and reinstalling windows...it's not under the remove software option in the control panel -i looked)
and i think a mac address is used, i think i remember seeing it somewhere when snooping around in the diagnostics part of the software...so if assigned MAC will work with a router, looks like i'll be investing in one next payday...i'm really sick of trying to get the software solution to work (not to mention losing hair and sleep)
