HI,
I upgraded to WIN XP PRO from ME ,i ran the compatability test first and was told there was a hardware problem with my geforce 2mx 200 card.i installed anyway and downloaded and installed the detonator XP drivers but it still wont work.i tried my sons riva tnt2 and that worked ok but when i put back the geforce 2mx it gave the same error saying it could not start this device.
is there any way around this to force the drivers or am i going to have to get a different card to use with XP??
i have gone back to ME and it works fine, but ME drives me mad with the constant shutdown problem it has...
help anyone..
ive tried a few forums but got no help.........

Well, I'd have to say it's the upgrade. Can you just install XP from nothing, or Dos or something of the like?
Maybe, also try download the Detonator XP drivers for Windows ME before installling XP, then install the actual XP drivers after doing so. XP shouldn't have a problem with the GeForce 2 MX200, so, it's probably the drivers. Are you running the drivers from the manufacturer or are you using the reference drivers from nVidia?
Click here to visit nVidia's website.

thanks for the reply m8,ive tried what you suggested and am at a loss as what to try next...
for some reason it just wont accept this card......
ive used the nvidia drivers as well as manufacturers still makes no odds...

Try using an OLD card that runs of the old VGA drivers, or use the TNT2 to install and make the driver be "Standard VGA Display Adapter" or something old like that, something that's compatible with everything.
Then install the drivers from nVidia.
Have you tried that?

i did install the tnt2 and installed the drivers from standard vga but when i put the mx 200 in it refused to start it..
its obviously a driver problem but i cant see how to get it to use the card..

Just incase, are you using the actual Detonator XP drivers for XP after you install it?
That's definetly some driver problem, can't think of why it would do such a thing.
You'll have to try a few different things, like try installing drivers differently and stuff..
Ohh, one last thing, are you running a Via board? If so, get the latest 4-in-1 drivers for it and see if that helps.

Sounds to me like it is a windows XP problem in that windows XP is not properly recognizing your card. Sounds like good old MS &*^$%*^ it up again

Well, I wouldn't say that off the bat. Just since it'll run the older TNT2.

I'm not sure if this will help or not, but I was just thinking it might be a resource issue, like your IRQ stuff or something.
Is your BIOS set to asign the Vid-card a IRQ? Most people, actaully, everyone I've ever talked with, has this setting enabled in their BIOS.
Just a thought.

Check on what Sarc suggested in the device manager.
Hmm...are you running antivirus software when you install the drivers?

thanks for all your help guys ill try out a few of your ideas and get back to you..

Well just remember, if all else fails, try the card manufactures technical support staff.
I've looked around, and the only problems I've read about the GeForce 2 MX200 and XP was a model from Abit I believe. But it was mostly useless junk for information, basically saying that you can't install the XP while using the GF2. So you "may" want to try installing XP with another video card, then change the video card later on after you have XP installed.
Now, if you still have problems later on after trying these steps, I recommend you call the manufacturers technical support, anyway you can, whether it be email or by phone.
First try these:
1: Try enabling the "Assign IRQ for VGA" setting in BIOS
From nVidia's technical support FAQ
After installing my NVIDIA-based graphics card, every time Windows loads, I get an error stating that my graphics card is not installed properly. How can I fix this?
Check in your motherboard's BIOS for the option "Assign IRQ to VGA" and make sure it is enabled. If you do not see this option in your motherboard BIOS, please contact your system/motherboard manufacturer to see if this option is available on your system. All NVIDIA-based graphics cards need to have an assigned IRQ to operate correctly. Also, conflicts with drivers from previous graphics cards can also prevent the NVIDIA drivers from installing correctly. Please remove any drivers from previous graphics cards before installing the NVIDIA-based graphics card. If you are unsure how to do this, contact the manufacturer of your graphics card for assistance with removing their display drivers correctly.
2: Try installing Windows XP with a different video card, then upgrading to the GeForce 2 MX200.
Example: Use the TNT2 card to install Windows XP and then change that with the GeForce 2 MX200 after you complete the installation process.
3: Checking the cards manufacturers webiste for technical FAQ's or online support with that is associated with your problem.
If your card was manufactured by PNY, then you would want to visit PNY's website to see if they have any listed problems and/or fixes for it. If you need some help with finding a website for a certain manufacturer, post back here, and we'll help you in locating them and getting your problem fixed as soon as possible.
Only when you have tried all three steps, or more if you know of some different things to try, such as previous or future posts. Then you might have to call or email the manufacturer about your problem. They'll be able to help you since they've probably had tested the card with Windows XP by now.
*Note: nVidia.com isn't the "best" for technical support for your cards. You'll need to do your research from the manufacturers website. nVidia only produces the chipsets and other important parts to your card, the manufacturer's build it and sell it.
I hope this helps you further. Good luck with it, and check back, if I find any further information on the topic, I'll be sure to post it.

Well, I hope this assists you, if you can open the case without bothering any warranties or the such...
Take a flashlight and look on the video card, and find some model numbers. Post those numbers and I'll be more than happy to assist you with finding who designed it, and getting you to thier technical support.

Okay, that card comes up under
Holtek Semiconductor Inc...
This company seems to be a different brand, that hasn't had much to do with the large computer market, but they should still be able to help us find your problem out.
They don't have much for information on thier website though..
Here is what I found...

It's no problem. I've heard that XP has been more trouble that it is worth to most users. I won't upgrade to it, nor do I want to. I'll keep Win98se and maybe get Win2k Pro
