Quantum computers

I caught this on techtv.
A scientist... Michio Kaku i beleive, was being interviewed and they were talking about the future of computers. He told of a computer that proved 3 times 5 is 15... using only 7 atoms to do the computing. That is amazing.
This article sums up the highs of the interview.. http://www.techtv.com/news/computin...3365879,00.html .
One thing i found interesting is that, he stated that fbi, cia, and other gov't agencies have been tracking these developments very closely, becuase a computer with this kind of computing power would make current forms of encryption useless. He also predicted that this is the type of computing required for true AI.. and it would be in our homes in 30 years...

The method of computing isn't what prevents a true AI. Speed (while necessary) isn't the limiting factor. Quantum computing will be nice to see, and certainly quite fast, but a true AI? No. It won't happen that easily, and I hope it never happens at all.
As for the encryption stuff, well, that is true. Even 128 bit encryption keys would be cracked quickly. We'll just have to invent a new branch of mathematics capable of producing the next level of algorithms.

the point the scientist was trying to make is.. that AI as we see it will never happen on a silicon chip, cause it would never support the speed that would be required. he beleived that if we were to achieve true ai... it would be with quantum computing.

Well, the other theory behind this has to do with the following, I swear to god I'm not making this up.
"If you put a cat in a box and close it, theoretically the cat could be dead or alive, you don't know because time as a whole has stopped inside the box, the reason....The cat doesn't comprehend time the same way humans do, so technically speaking to the cat, time has stopped, and if time has stopped, it takes zero time to do anything. which would lead to instantaneous calculations. Meaning anything you want to do and if it doesn't have too much space, an atom, and it doesn't comprehend time, it can theoretically do every calculation in the universe instatneously."
The answer is 42...But we already knew that.

Like I said, speed isn't the limiting factor.
It won't happen on quantum computers either.

AI will happen. The way a brain works is pretty simple. It's just massive.
As for quantum computing, it won't be widely useable because it doesn't follow standard computing practices. It's not a binary system.
The issue with encryption is that a quantum computer represents all possible solutions at the same time.
What you have to realize, is that a quantum computer isn't a 'computer' as we know it.

30 years eh...

Ugghh......Can I have one of these computers, theoretically, I think, it should become GOD instantly, as soon as it's created, it answers every question inputted into it instantly, so somewhere along the lines, shouldn't it become sentient, and then GOD!!

The answer.... is...
42.

It quite bothers me when people say "42" when the answer is actually:
"Forty-two."

yes bad grammar! quite bad grammar!

I would be happy with an OS with a good AI Super model interface. Imagine a woman that does everything you tell her to! How cool is that?
Posted by: Spork Lover
Fantasy land.....well I guess it is possible... you could try and make a woman do that... but she'd get ya one day

True AI will destroy us all.
But until then, it sure will be cool to play with!

Remember Terminator?
