Boot Disk Will Not Work!!

I just built a computer. It is an 1.4 AMD Athlon with a 40gb hard drive 256 mb ram. It has Biostar M/B. I got everything together and powered it up with my boot disk in the floppy dirve. It gets past the Biostar splash screen and tries to read the floppy for the boot record and says boot failure insert system disk and press enter to continue. I have tried 2 different floppy drives and still the same thing. I have used 2 different boot disks. I have formatted them and made them over again. Still no boot. I have tried the disks in another pc and it works fine. What is the problem!!

First of all, did you set the boot sequence in the BIOS? If its still at stock settings it may not have A included in the sequence. It should look something like A,C,D or A,C.
Also, considering how new this system is, there should be a function in the BIOS to let you boot from the CDROM, in that case, you wouldn't need a bootdisk, so long as your installing Windows 98 or higher. You'd put the CD in the CD-ROM, make sure that the option to boot from CD-ROM was on, make sure the CD-ROM or D was in the boot sequence before C, save the settings, and reboot. It should come up to a screen thats self explanitory, install windows from cd-rom blah blah.
Hope this helps.

I did set the boot sequence to A,C. It also says booting from ATAPI CD-ROM-FAILURE. I haven't looked for anything in the BIOS that says Boot from CD Rom. I will look for that though and try it. Why wouldn't it read the floppy? If I get it to boot from the CD will it ever read a floppy? Sounds stupid but it should read a system disk.

Have you looked and made sure that the floppy cable is connected properly? It could be pluged in backwards.

Some things to check for...
Make sure that everyone of the cables it set right, such as the FDD and HDD cables.
Also, make sure all of the power cables are set right.
Make sure the master/slave settings are set correctly on any full cable.
Make sure that your BIOS is set properly to a good boot sequence.
Also, make absolutely sure that you have the settings in BIOS for your HDD controllers right. And your FDD controller as well, if it can be manipulated in any way.

That ATAPI CD-ROM-FAILURE error sounds like you plugged the secondary IDE cable into the floppy connector.
Check every connection in the comp for errors. You could also have a defective floppy drive.

I have mapped the cables 2 or 3 times to make sure they are correct. The bad floppy is a thought but I have tried 2 different floppy drives. I know it's not plugged in backwards because I turned each end around and it said floppy failure during post. It comes on and you can see it TRYING to read the floppy but the light just goes off and it says boot failure, insert systen disk.

Does the floppy light come and stay on when u boot up the PC?

No the light does not stay on. It did when I changed the cable just out of frustration and I knew that was wrong but I thought what the heck!

Provided all your BIOS settings are correct for your floppy drive and your cable is in right, I would say you either have corrupted BIOS or a defective motherboard. There are a few things you can try though.
1. Unplug any extra peripherals you don't need to boot the machine. Sometimes in rare occasions, devices hooked up to the Parelell port can interfere with booting.
2. Try using the clear CMOS option in BIOS, or pull the clear CMOS jumper. Refer to your manual about it if your motherboard has a clear CMOS jumper.
3. Make sure virus checking is disabled in your CMOS if your motherboard has this feature.
Probably your best option is to RMA the board. There's no reason a bootable CD should get a boot disk failure as well as your floppy disks both.

Oh by the way, what kind of power supply are you using? IF it's underrated, it may be your boot devices aren't getting enough power to initialize correctly. Athlon systems should have a 300W power supply minimum.

I agree. AN RMA is seemingly going to be the only way to fix this. The power supply is a 300 watt. I think I will go that route today when I get home from work. Thanks for all the input!!!
