Lockups, not even two weeks into it...

Alright, I've had a ball and a half with this system now. I got some random lockups, and they have been getting worse over the last few days...

Now this doesn't happen in games, but I'm still suspecting an overheating problem...

I can't remember the exact model of HSF but it's from "CPU Cooler" and is rated for AMD 1.7Ghz+

It has a dual speed fan that reads a certain HSF temperature and switches from 2800 to 3400 RPM depending on the current temperature...

PC Alert III is reporting temperatures at nearly a 70% load being at 109F, which sounds reasonable, I idle at around 86F. Now these temperatures are almost garunteed right, since the program is not only certified for the use on this board, it's recommended with Fuzzy Logic 3.

Now, I'm not overclocking the chip or system in anyway, no need to do so yet.

System Statistics :
MSI K7T266 Pro2
AMD Athlon XP 1700+ @ 1.47Ghz
256mb PC2100 CAS 2.0-2-2 DDR
Sound Blaster Live! X-Gamer
PNY GeForce 2 MX400
USR/3com Pro 56k Analog modem
Maxtor Diamond Max 45Gb 7200RPM
Quantum TS8.4A 8.4Gb 5400RPM

Now, I've checked every possible solution to the problem. I've narrowed it down to two things. It's either windows having the craps or the CPU is overheating.

Here's the wierd thing though, when playing a game, I have yet to get a lockup or crash, only when in windows running a few programs, such as ICQ, Winamp, Topaz Chat, and an IE browser or two...

Any Ideas?

I'll most likely end up reinstalling windows, cause this has only occured in the past few days, and not when I built the system.

Do you have two sticks of ram, or only one?

Nice specs. No operating system showing.

Should be one stick of 256, running windows98SE.
I'd go with darky and update if you haven't, if so then reinstalling can't hurt.

Yeah, it's only a Single Double sided stick, and No nova, it's not the same problem as your having, as I had seen too many systems at that comp show with this board running with two and three sticks of ram

But, I think I found it.. But I don't see how...

The RAM Setting for the final output size (Burst size) was set to 8QW, being a larger increment than the 4QW setting. I've been running well over 7 hours now without a lockup.. so that may have been it...

(May not work with some types of DDR SDram) I guess it was for a reason lmfao

Okay, I've think I've got it. I had a lockup while running a simple screensaver with 8QW enabled. This being after almost 24 hours of non-stop windows.. Well, ok, one game of 4x4 adventure, but still. It didn't lock until I changed it. I've pretty much got it, I hope...
