Stoopid router/cable/computer

Lerts see... How do i say this. I have 3 computers, all online, 2 of them share a single adress, so when ones off the other is on, and one uses its own address. Now heres the problem.

Recently, I turned the second and third computers off, left them off for a few days, came back turned one on, and it wouldn't connect to the web. Now, I immediatly knew something was wrong,b ecause the first computer can connect fine. S, i try the third computer, it can't connect either.

So. I did some troubleshooting, I changed the identification on the first computer to that of the second and third computer, and it could still connect, so I therefore know the service is still up. My second thought, was to check the ports on the router, so i switch the plug of the first computer to that of the second computer, and it could still connect, same scenario with the third computer.

So, I therefore know its not the router. Although, after all of this I do notice something strange. Evenn after the first computer is off, the lights on the router, that diplay activity, link, and connection, are still on for that computer, no matter what slot I plug it in, but with the second and third computers,m the lights go off when the computer goes off.

Here is where I am totally stumped, I do not understand why the second and third computers, don't work. It can't be anything I did before shitting them down. Because there always idle, all they do is run seti.

Stats on the computers are

First computer (My computer)
AMD Athlon XP 1700+
A-Bit KG-7 motherboard
Linksys LNE 100tx Fast Ethernet Adapter(LNE 100TX v4)
Windows 98SE

Second copmuter (Elcrapo Backup PC)
Intel Celeron 500mhz
Iwill VD133 motherboard
Linksys LNE 100tx Fast Ethernet Adapter(LNE 100TX v4)
Windows ME

Third computer (Laptop)
Toshiba Satalite (Model ?)
Intel Celeron 700mhz
Netgear FA510 Fast Ethernet CadBus Card
Windows ME

Any ideas?
Don't ask why I have ME on two of my machines. Simply put, the backup PC is used alot by the kids I ocassionally babysit, and ME is idiot proof

im not sure i understand why ur doing what ur doing and what ur doing. do u only have two free ports on the hub/router?? or do u only have two static IP addresses??

Posted by: Darky!

Yes, I have 5 ports on the router, 2 are free, All three computers are plugged in. When ever I wanted to use my 2nd or 3rd computer, I would turn one off and turn the other on, and I could go about my bussiness. I have 2 static IP adresses, wich is why I turn one off then the other on. I was going to get a 3rd, but I can't get thhe 2nd and 3rd compys to connect in the first place.

The problem is, they all worked fine, until I turned them off one day, and then I turned one on, and it couldn't connect, so I tried the other and it couldn't connect either. I'm trying to figure out why they can't connect.

I'm thinking that the light stays on because of wake-on-lan. I might be wrong. But my PC's do the same, if i have wake on lan on. I don't know how this could relate to ur problem, though

Darky,

It sounds like your ISP is tagging your machine name to the IP address assigned by the DHCP servers. If you have a gateway/router, I would suggest changing its name to the computer name and let the router to proxy everything for you on one IP address.

hats just it though, the name of my computer is say cj*****-a and cj*****-b, I tried renameing my first to -b and it still worked. The two computers networks settings are exacctly identical, exept or the -a and -b. My only thought is they may have tried to send a signal of some dort to my machines, and one got to my computer, but the other didn't reach my second computer because it was off? *shrugs* do'nt know

call them up. they probably have a problem with one of ur IP addresses on their end.

just out of curiosity why static IP?? they are more pricey and really not needed less ur hosting ur own webserver. a router and one dynamic IP is by far cheaper.

Because I have cable. Not to mention dynamic IP's are acctually more pricy then the static IP they give you when you sign up. You have to pay an 20$ for a one time setup then its still the same price as it was before. Atleast where I live.
