Convergance? I don't think so

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Throughout most of last year, I have heard talks and prophecies of the technological convergance. It is happening but I think we as a society is not rdy. Lots of people dream of a futuristic home where everything is powered by computers and every house connected to one another through a network. And that your home's DVD/stereo/gaming system will all be combined into one box that does it all.

We've seen it happen with the new generation of gaming consoles. They can now go online, play DVDs and play multiplayer with players around the world. Weren't these available only to those who owned computers? Not any more.

It's happening. Pretty soon, u'll get an Xbox with DVD, Internet, multiplayer, and and LCD screen from LG. Sounds cool.

The problem is that why should we go on ahead while we're not prefected at the stage we are. Hackers and software piracy are everywhere. Networks and businesses lose money over Denial of service attacks. Windows still has some way to go to become a problem free OS, and Microsoft has it's problems with the legal system. Why create more chaos by leaping ahead when the problems today linger. This convergence is happening and it's going to create a lot of problems before it gets better. Imaging, in the future, that your home is hacked by basement hackers, and on your 40" flat screen TV, a flashing signs says"Down with Microsoft" and your house lights are flashing on and off?

Not good.

Thast what the plan is for the xbox but its being changed. When it was first announced that Xbox was going to be a home entertainment hub, then a large amount of the developers for the Xbox said they would not develop for the xbox if it turned out like that.

So MS changed it, but they left it open for expansion. Now MS has decided to put a new version of the xbox our every year thinking they can break the cycle of a console system. But they are also bringing back the "Entertainment Hub" aspects into the xbox. There was an article on Gamespot a little while back that talked about this and when gamespot contacted several game developers to get their comments on it, they once again said that if the xbox became an entertainment hub, they would NOT develop for it or stop developing for it.

I could go on more about this but I dont think this thread was intended to be an xbox thread.

This may sound Cool but it has many problems and will have limits. Nothing will ever replace the PC. There may be many attempts but none will ever suceed to eliminate the PC.

I'm just saying the PC is becoming more of a necessity of the home and may one day run it.

Yeah, the PC is becomming a necessity.

My Uncle has 4 PC's at his home running almost 24/7 and one of them controls his coffee pot, lights and a few other things. Some kind of wireless control that runs off of a PCI card. Its pretty cool, he can set what time his coffee brews so its ready before he gets up. Just put the stuff in for it the night before and its up and running in the morning.

There are some things that I like about turning a home into one big PC. There is a remote touchpad that can be programmed to control lights, curtains, tv/dvd/dish and just about everything else. A lot of rich people have them. That kinda stuff is cool, but when a toastmaster has the internet on it, im gonna scream.

I don't think I would want my home going nuts because some 9 year old script kiddy attacked it with a malicious program.

Can you imagine all the fun that would ensue when you cant get into your house, your lights go on and off, the alarm system is blaring, all the appliances turn on, the house burns down..ect....

Me too. But my point is on the first post is that we should keep the convergence on hold and keep the toast away from the Internet, until we can deal with the problems we have today. Imagine having your coffee controled by teenagers, and someone decides to have a light show in your house. Cuz sooner or later, PCs that run the houses will b connected to networks and with networks, u never know what happens.

BTW, north of where i live (toronto) in orangeville, they devoted a some section of the town to testing computer controlled houses. They're like a small block with 10 or so houses, each connected to a server in the corner of the block. The server is connected to every house on the block. Each house has a PC that is connected to the server and the PC basically runs evertyhing electronic in the house, including the toaster. You can actually cook start to microwave ur dinner from ur PC!!

LOL

It's amazing, I've been up there and everything so modern. You can talk to ur neighbour on an LCD screen from ur kitchen!!

I fail to see the benefit of networking entire houses together. Would it really make a difference if you could start your oven from your neighbors? Sure, it might make a difference with things such as smoke dectors or CO detectors, but I can't think of anything else.

It's just like Christmas

buy, buy, buy

and the pushers keep pushing

cause we always need another hit

I just wonder what's going to happen when AOL gets to version 99, are they going to have a century version?
