I put this here because who knows how it will turn out.
I just want to say im proud of how Canada pulled together for the people in the U.S and im thankful for all of us who did. Im tired of hearing it was Canada's fault that it was our borders just a thank you would have been nice instead or even nothing at all. Yes our Goverment could show they have balls and stand up for our right's but well thats a totally other issue .So i just wanted to say YAY Canadians for showing we have heart in out country . No matter what I am still proud to be Canadian. Sorry it was so long but I had to get this off my mind. Hugs all and hope I didnt offend annyone.

Oh and i forgot... THNX!

Posted by: Null Actor

Yeah, it'd be nice to have people stop blaming us.

After all, it's up to U.S. Border guards, not Canadian, to decide who enters the U.S.

Posted by: ashw

very true nova, we have slacked off on the border customs, and even after the events of sept 11 its still not as tight as it should be.

Build a stone and steel wall 30 feet high, electrify it.

Posted by: Spider

People weren't upset about the US/Canadian borders, it was the rest of Canada's borders, they "infiltrated" Canada, and then just strolled over here.

Posted by: Erekose

Well I can say (quite assuredly) that US customs was rather lax. When I was a freshman in high school I took a trip to Italy (April of '98), and on departure I know our bags were scanned rather cursorily and upon our return at least 4 of the students had what would be considered 'contraband' they did not claim (2 cases of Cuban cigars, a half round of proscuitto and some romano cheese. I myself had a botle of wine, a leather wallet, and a bottle of olive oil, within the laws if I'm not mistaken, but any one of us could have had a weapon, etc). Now I have never traveled into/out of Canada, but I'm pretty sure that if someone did not appear to suspicious, they were most likely not bothered much. So to blame it on one or any country's border guards is a rather moot point. It happened, It sucked, but let's not start pointing fingers at our friends.

But that is irrelevant. How can we be expected to stop them from entering our country legally, when they entered your country just as legally afterwards?

Hindsight is 20/20, but until they commit a crime, they are just normal people entering the country.

Posted by: Spider

I was just clarifying Nova, that's all.
I personally blame nobody, but if anyone is at fault, we are.

Posted by: Laz3dawg2

Amen...

Canada is a multicultural country with people from all backgrounds, but I do agree that Canada's border should be a little less open.

Posted by: redwench

it has no need to be less open. these people entered both canada and the us legally. most had no criminal record, so wouldnt have been stopped regardless of border checks. you cant go around keeping people that look arabic from entering your country.

Posted by: Bishop

We could use telepathy, scan the minds of everyone entering and if they have ill intent we shoot them on the spot!

Failing the telepathy factor, how about we just shoot everyone on the spot?

That'll sure cut down on terrorist acts by other nations on our own.

Posted by: Spider

We could always conquer Canada and make it the fifty-first state, and then do the borders the way we want them.

Posted by: Null Actor

You could try, but you would fail.

Fear the CIS.

And become like the US? No way. Open borders are half of what makes canada canada.

Americans have been trying to take over Canada for a long time. Ever since they took Alaska from the Russians it's been evident that America wants Canada to be it's biggest state.

Posted by: Null Actor

Go read some books, then come back to this conversation when you know what you are talking about.

Posted by: Spider

LOL!

Posted by: Chako

Um. He makes it sound like there was a big battle for Alaska with the Russians. Truth is, Alaska was bought for 2.5 cents an acre, and the Czar left $7,200,000.00 richer.

Now, lets be fair here. The War of 1812 started because of Britain’s usage of Americans in press gangs for her fleet. Furthermore, tension rose due to territorial disputes with Great Britain over the Northwest Territories and the border with Canada. Another reason for this war was also due in part of the blockade by the British of American allies, the French in Europe.

The war lasted for 2 years, and the US did try to capture Canada, but failed, as well did Britain in trying to capture New Orleans and Baltimore. The war of 1812 did one thing though, and that was to firm up all those territorial squabbles, ensure Americans broke away from Britain, and also ensured that the US would never try to annex Canada.

So technically, Zero is partially correct. The US did try to conquer Canada, just that it wasn't Canada at the time.

Posted by: Null Actor

My retort was just aimed at the fact that he made it sound like it's been a main priority ever since.

I think after we burned the whitehouse down they learned their lesson :P

Burning things is good.

Burning big buildings is better.

In reference to the original post in this thread... I didn't realize that the US was blaming Canada for ANYTHING... um..

Who's blaming Canada for stuff?

Posted by: Null Actor

US Government.

Been all over news headlines. They haven't been saying it outright, but there were a few good newsclips with some wack in the US saying.

"Well, it appears that they entered, from Canada. "

There has been more than that, but it's been all over the papers here. I'd imagine you don't hear about it as much down there.

Posted by: Shalome

Well, yeah, that I'd heard.. the whole "it appears they entered from Canada" thing. That's been on the new down here (several months ago, actually, and not much lately). But what I haven't heard is anyone blaming Canada for the fact that some terrorists came into the US through that border... the way it's reported down here, it's more like a statement of fact, no accusation involved.

Posted by: Null Actor

Well, the US is also calling for us to strengthen our borders.

Our borders aren't the problem.

Posted by: Chako

I predicted all of this shortly after 911. It is no secret that the US Government has always wanted Canada to adopt their immigration policies. They also view Canada as a security risk with easy access to the US via Canada. This is no big secret. I have noticed however, that the Northern States are generally ok with the whole issue, simply because they are aware of how much trade goes on in a day (we are talking big bucks) across the border. Trade that is vital for both the US and Canada. Mostly the raucous voices are usually from the South. They cry foul the most about how porous the borders are.

Shalome, it may not be big news down there, but up here, many friendly towards the US Canadians are starting to feel ticked off at the finger pointing and inane excuses, and quite possibly, the underhanded way the issue has been reported by US media. Many Canadians watch CNN.

As I have stated before in September, this was predictable.

Posted by: Null Actor

Agreed. I see all the slight overtones in all of the USs talks about borders. It's disgusting. They want to close the border, feel free. But I can guarantee US citizens, especially in the area near the border like Chako was talking about, will be in a major uproar within a few months.

Posted by: Null Actor

If we had a REAL prime minister, he would have called Bullshit on the US long ago.

Chretien ceased being useful a long time ago though. Now he's just a guy that talks funny.

IT IS Z! NOT ZED!

Wasn't some party in quebec promising to build a wall around quebec to keep outsiders out if they were elected

Posted by: Bishop

I don't know, I was simply siding with practicality.

Posted by: Heathen

Chretien may be a joke now but look at the other options?

Stockwell Day? How can a man like that run the country? ( And whats with that name???)

Joe Clark??? PLEASE - he's the last guy we need.

I'm not even gonna mention the NDP (Just look at BC)

I agree Chretien is not the best.... but who else would ya vote for?

Posted by: Muggs

Too bad Trudeau isnt still the man up here. He'd tell bush where to go...

dunno i just felt like saying that.

Take over Canada!

In Todays News:

U.S. R&D base Wright Patterson Air Force Base develops mach 4 jet capabilities.

Canadian airforce develops jets to replace old propeller powered WW2 era American p-52s.
