Adelphia's Bad Service

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

After spending two weeks making my personal web site in flash (not easy) I got a domain name and installed IIS. To my surprise I couldn’t get the web server to work outside of my local network.

I must have spent 5 hours trying to figure out why I could not get the web server working. Then it hit me! They Block port 80 (this is needed for a web site to work without extra syntax), I know this because I heard about ISP’s blocking port 80 to prevent people from spreading the code red virus. When I called them to ask them if port 80 was blocked I waited 1 hour to talk to a level 1 tech (high school drop out).

I asked the tech if they block port 80 and why my upload speed seemed to be 10kb/sec. My download BTW is about 700kb/s. I could tell that I had just blown a hole in his mind; he replied "Let me ask my Sr. Tech". OH GOD! This wasn’t a hard question (at least I don't think it was)

After another 30 min's he comes back to the phone and tells me "I don't know??? But it doesn’t matter since you are not allowed to host a web site anyway" this is mind blowing. They would even give me an answer. Then he tells me "We do offer a free 5MB's of web space." Yeah that’s like maybe half of the intro I did in flash. Oh and they told me that my upload is 128Kb/sc and they didn’t know why my upload was so bad. They didn’t even offer me a new modem.

To sum it up they suck, all they did was give me the run around. If they would have just told me the truth maybe I would be so mad.

Hmmm, Adelphia is a newcomer in the broadband field, so I guess they're on the wrong track if their tech support is as sloppy as it is.

I'd recommend switching to another broadband provider, but if there is no one else in your area, you're unfortunately stuck with them. My own provider (AT&T Broadband) has dismal tech support most of the time, but they're not as sloppy as Adelphia, from your example...

I can also get Bell South DSL but I don't know if thats any better. Plus I heard DSL downloads cap at 256Kb/s Adelphia is bad just because of the port blocking and the odd upload speed but there download speed is very good. I happen to be 20 feet away from the areas amplifier.

I guess the reason that I posted my story is to tell people who might be thinking about Adelphia that you can not host a web page.

Simply blocking port 80 to stop the spread of the Code Red worm was suppsed to be a slapdash solution -- a temporary fix until the necessary software patches were distributed. If that company didn't bother to get the patch (which came out a few days after Code Red was discovered) then they're not only sloppy, but potentially dangerous -- what are they going to do next time a similar worm comes around? Nothing? Shut down altogether? I'd get a new provider if I were you.

there are a lot of isps that dont allow webhosting. read your agreement before you sign up with a service provider.

I just called adelphia today, asking the same question after being transfered two times... I also got refered to some chick, who didn't know what the hell she was talking about... as fallows...
"blah blah, im trying to host my website on port 80, and i dont know why i cant host it on port 80, but it works on any other random port i come up with... do you know why?" ... "because thats one of the ports that we block" ... "well, im trying to host a server on port 80, because the DNS server cant recognize my site unless i use the default HTTP port (80) or URL Forwarding, which doesn't look professional, because all the links on my site show my ip address instead of the WWW address..."
soo... The dumb bitch comes back with "well you need to do a work aroud" ... I'm like... "work around, ummm what the hell is a work around " ...

I like how the LoGiC put it "less than high school grad" .... anyways she comes back with "using a differnt port... " .... OMFG! ... "i already told you, that it works on differnt ports, and it looks like shit, using URL FORWARDING".... so i start to get frustrated, about to hang up... but i went ahead and asked...
"why the hell do you guy block port 80?" ... your gonna love this response...
"because its one of the more important ports, that gets used the most" ... HJAHAHAHAH... of coarse i come back with ... "no shit, thats why im trying to use it, because its the DEFAULT PORT, so i can register with a DNS server, and host my web site"

NOTE TO ALL... ummm, if you have problems with adelphia, be preparte to talk to someone DUMBER than you, because i swear, either they are woorse than an 80 year old man wondering why his email didn't send... when the basis of the problem was BECAUSE HE FORGOT TO CLICK SEND!

ANYWAYS.... Here is what she said... "....." and "....." NOT A GOD DAMN THING...
well,I was like "well, your not helping me at all, and arguing isnt going to help, because you cant do a damn thing about it... well im done talking to you, thats all i needed to know" ... im a nice guy so i wait for her curtious bull shit... when i think she was waiting for me to hang up...
"thank you for calling adelphia cable, and have a nice day"

Well thrive on that... F U C K ADELPHIA!

Logic, sorry to hear about your Adelphia experience but I can assure you, the Bellsouth DSL is great, support and all. I have had Ultra DSL since Oct. 2003, and just got Extreme DSL(3.0 Mbps down, 384Kbps up), and its incredible. Yeah the upload isnt too great, but for only $45/month, you cant beat it. Called support twice, both times didnt wait long at all, and my question was answered immediately.

There is definitely no cap at 256k, I usually DL at around 500k and get spikes pretty often of around 2Mbps. But I just got it, and am the only one in my area that has it. So those may not last long. I dont know about the upload speeds though, havent tested those yet, will try to and get back to you.

I highly recommend Bellsouth.

I just started using Adelphia this month. They have provided me with great service, great tech support (only needed it once, and it wasn't really even a tech issue), and not to mention they're speeds are very fast.

Need to vent... For the past few days my Adelphia connection has been annoyingly slow. All I can basically do is use Trillian and play Diablo II. I had to check my email today at work because hotmail wouldn't even load. Other pages take at least 5 minutes. Whether it's happening on their end or mine, I'm not certain. I turned off my PC and reset the modem and checked all the cables. All seems to be in order. I looked at some of the suggestions posted and I'll try those tonight to see if that helps.

As to their support, I called them twice and 50% of the time they were actually able to help. The second time, I was directed to an engineer and he even had problems. He didn't really help much but somehow it got fixed. *shrugs* At least they try...

Adelphia has a monopoly on cable connection up here. I've considered switching to Verizon DSL (another monopoly), but figure it's just not worth it especially since that means I would have to sign up for long distance as well.

Here's to living in Bumble#*&%!

ya high speed doesnt always seem to work too well
most companies overload the nodes with people so at peak usage time 4:00pm to 7:00 pm uploads and downs are severely slow sometimes.
