(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

i was wondering if anyone knew roughly what the operating temp for ASUS A7V with amd 900 Athlon should be. (just a rough range) i know over 140 f is to high..

Posted by: Gerbilo

there was another post about this, lemme try to dig it up for ya Athlons are like 30-40C though, they aren't like Intel, mine has hit 62C and with my little system rigged right, i've hit 7C hehe

This post is a few months old but see if it can help ya at all

Spid, I've hit 103C before without a fan, and it was in windows. Heheheheh I'm running safely at around 45-60C though an athlon will surely burn at absurd temperatures. 20's to 40's Celcius is where you want to stay with an athlon because they can easily fry at much higher.

Posted by: The-AoD

Ohh if you're going for a thermaltake orb you might as well cancel that and get a Globalwin, the newest FOP coolers are twice the power of the Orb's

Posted by: Gerbilo

um, AoD's faith has been shaken in the orb hehe. told ya globalwin fans were good.

well, no more heat troubles for me, was talking to bobbo about it, thought the sensor might be broken it's not, working fine, took off the hsf, cleaned off that and the die of thermal compound reapplied it, reseated both, now running at it's stock 133x10 (1333mhz ) at 36C sweet, much better than up in the 50's at 133x7.5 LOL hahahaha, also moved around the fans inside *happy he has it running cooler*
anyway must go look at LN2 cooling now !

Posted by: Spider

yeah, 2 and a half hours of playing rune with all the graphics and all that cranked up (of course!) my proc was running at 56C idles at around 36c though

Posted by: The-AoD

Oh great, spider is going to start overclocking. *Pre-Laughs at spider for burning the AMD up* LMFAO

Ohh Spid, I Idle at around 70F which is around say what 20-22C? Though at full load I am around 57C which is more than in the CPU specs of a Katmai Pentium 3 Max recommended Temp for these things are around 80C so, even at an overclock, i'm not stressing temperature wise. *Stares at 120mmx120mm @ 3000 RPM fan*

Unfortunately AMD sells their chips and marks them with a certain speed. the speed they sell them at are already way overclocked and cooling is a huge problem with K7 chips. u can continue to spend money on cooling the thing off or underclock the chip. barring that take the heatsink off the CPU scrape and clean and scrape the bottom of the heatsink with a new razorblade and clean all remaining gunk off the bottom of the heatsink with rubbing alcohol. make SURE that the heatsink bottom is flat and doesnt have any gouges in it. then apply a drop of heatsink compound NOT tape to the top of the cpu. small drop about the size of less than a third of a pencil eraser and carefully place the heatsink back on top while watching for leakage if u placed too much compound. fire it up and see if that helps.

if ur going to get a different case i highly recomend a new one from antec their cases have extremely good airflow and plenty of room. u can also get those ide and fdd cables that are wound into a thin braid which also help with airflow. and try to tuck all the extra cables up and out of the way of the case fans. plus there are chipset coolers which if u have a K7 are a must especially with a ASUS MB. make sure ur vid chip(s) on ur vid card have a cooling fan as well. and u can even get memmory chip coolers for K7 DDR memmory.

JANNA...it's running at 100mhz to the frontside bus..didn't want to try overclocking yet till i solved heat problem.
i will try the heatsink compound....but i will look for larger case.even though it is brand new, the first case i bought wouldn't even fit the asus mb cause of it's size...the one i have is just able to fit in . i think it's made for the smaller pentium mb..even though mounting screws matched up

Depends on the Asus board. The last three systems I made used the asus boards (Two Durons and an Tbird) Average temps I observed were in the 28-33c for the processors. (A7v/133) I do NOT use the orbs, they are cheap cash wise, but do not perform to my satisfaction. I use alpha 6035 heatsinks with the ysteck fans. Good silicon heatsink paste is all that is needed. Janna is right about the amount used. Less is generally better with heatsink paste.
One thing I would add though. Heastinks are not light bulbs. Please do not twist and wriggle the heastink around to seat it. If you HAVE to, you likely used too much paste. And paste is allmost ALLWAYS preferable to that stupid thermal pad most heatsinks ship with. SOmetimes a 3-6 degree temp drop using properly applied paste will be observed.

well...let me tell you chrome orb piece-o-crap failed after 5 days..fan stopped good thing i was here..hit 188f inside of 5 minutes.ripped it outta there!! got better mid atx case...thermal compound as recommended on posts...reseated amd fan i started with..cruising at a cooler 120f....20 degrees cooler than with other case....thanks muchly to all who posted
