The Surgeon General's Warning, A Step Closer

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

No, it's not more bad news for minors this time. It's taking a game and labeling it to alert any user of an unethical content:

The Anti-Defamation League issued a report Tuesday warning of computer games that espouse racist violence.

The organization's main exhibit was "Ethnic Cleansing,"
a computer game sold by Resistance Records, a small underground label that specializes in bands spouting racist and Nazi messages.

The game requires players to wander through urban streets and subway tunnels and to attack African-American, Hispanic and Jewish characters. Besides offensive racial stereotypes, the game includes repeated racist images and audio content.

Initially, "Ethnic Cleansing" looks little different from popular shooting games such as "Quake." The sophisticated graphics of the game could attract players who wouldn't realize the true nature of the material until they were well into the game, Foxman said.

"It piggybacks on something that is very legitimate and popular and perverts it," he said. "It can attract people who aren't necessarily going to look for this kind of material."

I agree with this. If any game has to fall to the level of discrimination, I definately don't want to buy it. Read on at C|Net here.

Hmmm, I guess they haven't played Redneck Rampage ... that Ethical Cleansing game sounds too extreme (taking freedom of expression to an abusive level), and I agree - they should kick the game off the shelves...

if u buy a game called "ethnic cleansing" and u get home play it and become offended by the content then sue god allah and everyone cuz u didnt know.... then u should be beat witha stick for stupidity.

one other thing i dont see how it can be wrong for one group to have race based entertainment ie "ethnic cleansing" game while its perfectly ok for another group to have race based entertainment ie Rap music. if u dont think rap isnt racially oriented try listening to the lyrics. its ok to be a racist if ur black ala malcolmX, sheila jackson lee, and jesse jackson. but its not ok to be racist if ur white. im a bit confused. to me racism is racism white black or green.

Hehe JANNA ... the fact that there is Black Music Awards and Latino Music Awards but no "White Music Awards" - or the fact that there is a Black Entertainment Channel and Asian/Latino channels but no strictly "White" channels pretty much exemplifies the double standards that racism currently has...

This is something I've been b1tching about for almost 4 years now. Ever since I first saw black entertainment television, I've been disgusted by the double standards.

I am not a racist person. Not a racist bone in my body.

However, something like BET leaves me shaking my head. Offended by the 'they did it to us, so it's now okay for us to do it to them' mentality.

When the hell will people learn.

I always thought it was interesting that the colored are offended when a white person uses the "N" word, it is racism, but they use it all the time and their is no harm.

They also have several words to describe non Colored such as Honky, and the like, but using those words is not racism

those are my points exactly and to further exemplify it during the simpson trial if u beleived simspon was guilty u were a racist. the news media every nite came out and said as much.

'Cracker' is my current favorite term.

Go figure.

People need to realize that racism is racism, regardless of the 'color' of the speaker.

Blacks are just so racist. *grin*

The way I understand it, this wouldn't limit the availability of any game. This would only push for labels if a game is offensive. I'm only worried it will most likely evolve much further..

I like labeling that is done voluntarily by the industry. This gives us a clue as to the violence level etc so that we can screen it out ourselves. There is no possibility of an unbiased screening by a government entity. Keep the revenuers out of it as they always go too far. "Doin' good ain't got no end".

If Redneck Rampage has taught us anything it is that it is ok to shoot aliens and cloned white people who are rednecks. Must be time to open up that can of w*****s. j/k

Getting back to the original post-

Yes, this kind of stuff should carry warnings on it. Hell, I think all games should carry warnings. The ESRB system is a good idea that helps parents decide what they want their children to play (or not play)

The good news about 'Ethical Cleansing' - its made by some underground label. That means that we probably wont see it in best buy or wall mart anytime soon.
