RAID Tutorial: Part 3

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: TotalRecall

VoidYourWarranty has posted the final edition of their 3 part RAID tutorial. If you missed the first two, part 1 is here and part 2 is here. Here's a snip:

The most common architectures are known as HDA's, where the controller handles the majority of the RAID calculations. However, HDA is a term that is not often described well enough. In fact, it seems as though for some reason unknown to me (e-mails are welcome) that it is not defined well by anyone. Since the term is defined "Hardware Disk Array", I suppose (suppose!) this means that RAID algorythms should be calculated on-board using a RISC processor.

HDA's fit into a wider array of architectures, including SAN's. SAN's are a wonderful thing, they allow storage to be detached from the computer and placed in their own enclosures completely independant of a single computer. These also fit into NAS, which allows the SAN's to be accessible through a network interface. Though neither of these implies RAID technology, larger SAN's require a certain amount of redundancy to operate efficiently and thus RAID operability is a must in a SAN.

The author strongly urges you read the first 2 parts before reading this. Get part 3 here.
