Microsoft changed its privacy policy Wednesday after a security firm discovered that Windows Media Player keeps a file on the users computer that tracks which DVD's have been watched on the computer, in addition to contacting a Microsoft server to find the title of the DVD and leaving a digital fingerprint on the server.
In a Web advisory, computer privacy and security consultant Richard Smith detailed what he termed "a number of serious privacy problems" with the Windows Media Player for the Windows XP operating system.
The posting flagged a feature that allows Microsoft to log what DVDs play on a particular PC through the use of an electronic tracking file known as a "cookie."

I am really concerned about this. Are there any other known issues with XP?

Yep, the whole passport thing, which XP has activated. One part of the passport deals with MS wanting to house your personal information on their highly protected servers. They promise that thier privacy policy includes not sending your information other companies outside of thier partners however they cannot guarantee the privacy policy that their partners have.

With ZoneAlarm, when in doubt, Block the access of the file. I had some stuff trying to access the net when I was using ZoneAlarm and I just blocked them. I dont use ZA anymore though cuz it was causing me problemos.

Boycotting Windows XP is the best solution. When they decide to remove the policeware and bloat, I'll consider buying it.

Hmm I didn't know that. I have XP on my laptop (what I'm on now and the one I plan to take when I move out) and I use the passport thingamajig to check my hotmail account. I use the WinDVD program to watch DVDs. Is there anything else I need to worry about with XP?
