Internet running out of room?

A movement has been around for a few years for the Internet to start switching from IPv4 to IPv6. IPv4, the current IP addressing scheme, is quickly running out of addresses with all the new computers coming online in addition to all of the web enabled cell phones and handheld devices. The European Commission has started pushing harder for the conversion to IPv6 to start, reminding people that the reserve of available addresses left in IPv4 will run out by 2005.
"The EC says 74 percent of IPv4 addresses belong to North American organizations, with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford each owning more addresses than the Peoples' Republic of China." EC is also reminding the world that both standards, IPv4 and IPv6, will have to run online at the same time for quite a while during the conversion process, similar to Cell grids having to support both analog and digital technologies due to the mix of phones on the market.
The European Commission on Thursday called for more efforts to expand the Internet's real estate because the current one is running out of space.
The EC said in a statement that business and government leaders in Europe must work harder to shift the Internet infrastructure to run on Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) from the current IPv4 to make room for the flood of wireless devices crowding the Net.
Every device that accesses the Internet--such as a PC, a personal digital assistant or a cell phone--needs an IP address. Switching to IPv6 would help meet the growing demand for IP addresses, as the technology allows for more than does the current system.
