Russia claims judges cheated???

Say what?
Those people don't know how to cheat fair!
P.S. Congrats to the womans hockey team from Canada.
Posted by: Xtren
About the woman's hockey team...... They deffinately desrved to win! I hate to break it to all you American fans, but Canada had to kill off 13 penalties and they played with a lot of heart, outshooting their opponents as well. It was a tight game in the end but I was happy with the result.
As for the men's team, they got a break with Belarus and it will be interesting to see who wins between Russia and USA. Anyone see an all North American final coming along? We'll find out soon...
Posted by: Heathen
Well said XTren.
Looking forward to having a few pops on Sunday watching the game.
GO CANADA GO.... eh!!!
Posted by: Xtren
It's going to be hard for them to win, especially if they are against the Americans. Home ice advantage is going to be killer. I still have my faith though, you never know what might happen. Anyway, you can look on the bright side, Canada wins a medal either way.

The Olympics should be disbanded. Its original purpose was to promote good will among nations. Obviously it doesn't serve that purpose anymore.
Posted by: Xtren
So what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What kind of Olympics would they be without good rivalries and controversy? It would be like playing in some totally incompetitive hockey league with people of all different skill levels. Chaos!!!!!!!!!!!! How could we possibly go without the Olympics? These days I spend all my time watching them. I still can't get over the fact that Canada didn't even win one gold medal in Curling! That's one of the sports that we are really good at! Oh well, the Olympics are always gonna be there, no matter what the Russians say, you just gotta love 'em.

Being competitive has nothing to do with winning or throwing a fit about bad refs and cheating.
Posted by: Xtren
Being competitive tends to make you take the game more seriously, therefore you do throw fits and argue about bad calls if you really want to win. Therefore being competitive DOES have a lot to do with all that stuff.
Posted by: Ion Silverbolt
True competitors get their thrill from playing the game. In their minds, winning isn't the most important thing.
When all players do is ***** about calls and try to cheat, it ruins what makes the game fun in the first place.

Being competitive means giving your best effort to what ever challenge you face. As Ion stated (quote)"Being competitive has nothing to do with winning or throwing a fit about bad refs and cheating." As long as you give your best effort whether you win or lose, that is all you can ask of yourself. Even if you got a bad call, or been cheated. You know in your heart, "You Are The Winner"
Posted by: Xtren
Yeah, too much complaining and sulking isn't much fun too watch, especially since the same thing has probably happened to other people in the past as well. There is a quite visible distinction between being a sore loser and taking one for the team though. You can't say the games are always fair but sometimes people do tend to overexagerate.
Posted by: Xtren
Yeah but not all people take that as calmly as you would. I doubt hockey players walk away losing the gold medal game really happy cause they "gave their best effort". It's whats on the scoresheets that counts because that is what everyone else sees.

The olympics is nothing but an international shlong measuring contest.
It's pathetic.
Posted by: Ion Silverbolt
lol Nova!
The biggest problem I have with it is the Olymic's main goal is to promote international good will. When athletes become sore losers, cheat, and otherwise *****, it reflects poorly on the country they represent. Which is far more important IMO, than a cheap gold coin.
Posted by: Xtren
Ahhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You don't know how bad that statement sounds to someone who loves the event and hates to miss any of the action. I always thought everyone likes the Olympics........ but I guess opinions do vary

I am not so sure that it is the "athletes" that are doing the complaining ..... I think it is "some" old fart sitting back in their home country that tries to turn the Olympics into something political! If the "games" were left alone and the "best non-professional athlete" from each country were allowed to represent their country, in the sport they excel in, for their abilitiy, it would still be a good thing.
Whatever happened to the ruling about the Olympics were for "non-professional" athletes, anyway? Most of you are too young to remember Jim Thorp (USA) being stripped of his metal ... because he somehow made a "profit" prior to being part of the Olympics. Today, almost every commercial, on television, has one or another "Olympic Athlete" being paid to do something!
Edit: In case anyone wants to read up a little about Jim Thorp here is an article that I found with a "quick search". I had forgotten that his metals were returned to his family, YEARS LATER!

Posted by: Xtren
Yeah, for example Jaime Salé and David Pelletier didn't argue their guts out to get the gold medal, it was the stupid Canadian press that got us the medal but made us look like a bunch of sore losers. They did deserve the medal but lots of people have been ripped off in the past so I think we made way too big of a fuss about it.
Posted by: redwench
yes, one does have to separate the athletes from thier countries. its rare that the athlete says much beyond the "i did my best, it just wasnt good enough". which is what they SHOULD say. i mainly watch figure skating just to see what they do, the judging is so archaic that i dont usually pay much attention to it. when the block judging stops (on all sides, including ours) and there are some more rules regarding deductions, ill pay attention to it.
did you guys know that the judges watch the skaters practice? now theres a good way to bias yourself prior to the real event.
Posted by: tkron
I am sure all those excessive red blood cells that were found in the Russian Skier were there because the skier was genetically enginered at the time of conception, and not because of anything that was given to her while attending the Olympics.
I thought that it was interesting, that one of the few times I watched any part of the Olympics the announcer commented that the reason most of the skiers had dyed their hair because they were told that it interfers with the drug testing that is done on their hair samples.
I am also sure that the Americans would do nothing to enhance their atheletes chances of winning any event with anything that could not be detected by the existing drug tests. NOT
Posted by: Shalome
I just saw a news report discussing all the judging controversy... the reporter said that instead of the 2002 Winter Games, this will be remembered as the 2002 "Whining Games."
Block judging is pathetic. Countries complaining about losing is ridiculous. The fact that the Apolo Ohno thing spilled over onto Battle.net (resulting in the OTS channel being flooded with badly worded rants from Koreans calling all USA-ers vile dogs because the Koreans shouldn't have been disqualified..) is just bizarre.
Yes, every competitor wants to win. Part of being competitive, though, should mean learning to accept a loss gracefully. This should go for the representitives of countries as well as the atheletes...

Those coins are far from cheap. Considering how much an ounce of gold goes for.

True, but you don't have to be happy you lost! All I'm saying is you compete in these games because of the love of the sport. Someone's got to win someone has to lose!
Hockey, Baseball, Basketball, what ever, if you can't deal with losing then I suggest you don't compete! Nothing worse than an amputated spirit, there is no prosthetic for that.

Olympics should be the competition of top amateur athletes. Ever since they allowed professionals to compete, my interest have waned. Why should a poor starving kid doing the best he can with the little he’s got, strives to go when some pro making a million a year can get in there and win simply because of the best equipment, staff, etc... It must be heart breaking for the amateur athletes that cannot devote every waking moment to his sport, must deal with sub par training facilities, equipment etc…
It is pathetic. I can remember a time when athletes were not allowed to make money at their sport. They did it for the enjoyment and the challenge of being the best they can be. With a possible goal of making a living after their amateur careers.
Now, we get NHL players, NBA players, Professional skaters, etc...diluting the Olympics.
Take for instance hockey this year. There was more *****ing and shuffling of pro players by countries around the world then there was focus on other sports with amateurs. Since these players are stars, they overshadow others probably more deserving of attention.
Take into account that many countries have a bad attitude about the Olympics. Some even give their athletes a big bonus for wining the gold, and you have something that was never meant to be. Is it any wonder that in some sports, judging sucks.
Olympics will always have controversy simply because its the greatest multi-international meet. When cultures clash, it isn't surprising that some flare ups occur.
Posted by: Xtren
Yeah I have to agree with you there, the Olympics should give the amateur athletes from around the world a chance to compete. In soccer (summer Olympics) there are no pro athletes and that is bacause they have the World cup once every four years. They should make a tournament like that for hockey players as well. By the way, if anyone watches the World Junior Hockey Championships the tournament is really exciting. Wouldn't you like to see some of those athletes playing at the Olympics?! NHL players for example are millionaires and should theregnot compete and leave space for other players that might never get another chance to play at the Olympics. This year the whole Canadian team is made up of NHL players, even NHL coaches! I too would like to see more amateur athletes at the Olympics in the future.

I for one remember Thorpe (from history class) he was given some pittance fee to go out on the weekends by the manager of football team he played on. Jim Thorpe went to the Olympics and set all sorts of track records and won all sorts of gold only to have it taken away for beer money on a friday night. I think the whole system needs a serious overhaul. I knew stuff like this was going to happen after the Canadians got the gold. Not that it is their fault.
Posted by: Xtren
I watched the entire Canada-USA hockey game on the big screen at my relative's house. It was a great game, but even though I hate to break it to you it was almost a blowout. Of course the score would have been higher if that weiner Mario Lemieux could have slid the puck into the empty net from two feet away. Then again I'm satisfied with the end result. Of course, the reason for that is because I am Canadian.
Posted by: rockjock
We (Canada & US) used to put up amateur hockey & basketball teams. We got our buts kicked by the communist block countries. The Russians, in particular, would pick people that showed some talent and train them. These teams became the equivalent of pro teams but were still classed as amateurs because they were not paid a salary. The "state" supported them in every way except pay. This was their way of ensuring that they had an edge.
We claimed that these were pro players and lobbied to open certain events to the pros so that all could complete on an even basis.
I agree that it would be nice if we could actually have amateurs in these events but how do you do it with the underhanded crap that takes place? I would love to see the definations changed so that the true amateurs get to compete. No pros, government sponsership, or Nike sponsership allowed!
Posted by: redwench
well, you kinda either have to throw it open to everyone, or only allow true amatuers. and i dont know of any sport, except maybe long distance running, where a true amatuer can support him/herself seperately from being an athlete.
and lets not completely dis the communist block. they did the same with all the arts. musicians, athletes, actors, whatever. its the communist system. it does essentially make them pro, but its not thier fault. they didnt exactly have a choice to be otherwise.
most sports are just too expensive now for nonpros to do. and i think now, most people would be very disappointed in the quality of competition if only true amatuers were allowed to compete.
i say, just throw the damn games open to whoever wishes to compete. then there is no arguements about eligibility, at least on that basis.
Posted by: Xtren
Actually right now the games are pretty much open to anyone who wants to compete. The only problem is that most of the best that countries have to offer are pros. Therefore they send the professional athletes because they are the athletes that will bring success. I would like to see more amateurs at the games, but on the other hand there would not be as high a level of competition.

the olimpics rock but all the countries cry if they lose its so stupid
Posted by: Xtren
Yes they do, hate to put my own country down, but we cryed so much that they gave us the Gold Medal. You probably already know what I'm talking about so I won't explain.
Posted by: redwench
xtren, im curious, why do you keep resurrecting old threads that are done?
Posted by: Erekose
well who says when theyre done... oh, well okay then ill just keep my trap shut
Posted by: Xtren
As long as the thread is still visible, it's not done, and besides someone else replyed to something I posted a while ago, so it wasn't me who resurected the thread, even though I did help.
Posted by: Darky!
I think the point was, noone cares anymore, or atleast cares enough to argue/rant/flame about it anymore. Therefore, its DEAD.
Posted by: Xtren
Have it your way, but people do still reply either way.
Posted by: Erekose
no they dont
Posted by: Xtren
Then why did you just reply to my post?

Xtren, either way, don't ressurect old threads anymore. People are getting tired of this one inparticular, ellen even said so herself.
Posted by: Ion Silverbolt
If no one cares about this thread, then they shouldn't be reading it. Just because the majority despises this thread now doesn't mean people who are interested in it can't post in it.
The thread stays. And anyone can post here as long as they aren't breaking any forum rules.
Posted by: EOT(US)
Well ............. excuse me! Mr. Moderator .....
gzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz it was just a suggestion! hehe I didn't know we had such formal rigid rules, here!
Just kidding .... so don't get your pantyhose pulled up TOO TIGHT!
Posted by: Spider
I've only read about 6 replys in this thread, I have no idea what anyone is talking about.
Posted by: Ion Silverbolt
Let me simplify it for you. People are saying Extren and others can't post here anymore like it's some rule. It's not. They have as much right to post as anyone does.
If I used my mode status with what I think about this thread, I would have deleted it from the first post because the Olympics are stupid IMO. But I am adhering to the forum guidelines. Because everyone should be treated the same and have the same rights.
If you really have a problem with this thread staying here, take it up with Laggy. He's the supreme court.
Posted by: EOT(US)
Wow ...... if you are married I hope you "obey" your wife as well as you do "the rules" here! LOL
I do NOT have a problem with it ..... but if you do .... then let the "games" begin! We can have an OTS.Olympics .... if you would like
P.S. And btw ...... I don't see anyplace where anyone has said anybody can NOT post to this thread ..... we just said we are tired of it popping up!!!!
