Im getting a cable/dsl connection soon for my new comp.. which service do you recomend?

Cable all the way. When going with cable, you usually don't have a choice as to what company to go with. Just use your local cable co. If you've got more than one option, talk to ppl in the area who use both and see what people's opinions are.

That should give you an idea of service in your area. Cable is a shared medium, whereas DSL is a dedicated line.

Thanks guys

Fenix in our area I know of a few DSL providers....
Verizon<----sucks
DirectTV(telocity)
Earthlink(sprint)
and
Cable from CableVision(Optimum Online)<----Rules!!
I would go with the cable, it is $20 cheaper then those three DSL providors and is great.

Everyone in mt area gets a DSL connection from the same provider..... but either way I wouldn't go with Earthlink if I were you.

Hey Fenix, the DSL in our area isn't too great you should get cable. OptimumOnline is good.

Cable is usually the better choice anyway. I can't get it in my area so I have DSL.

I like DSL better than Cable. I thought about getting cable a little while ago, but after reading up on it, I decided to stick to DSL.
The thing I dont like about cable is that its a shared connection, so if a lot of people in your area are on at once, its going to affect everyone.
Cable usually has higher upload than DSL, so that is a good point with it. And since Ping times are dependant on your physical location, line noise, line quality and everything else, its hard to say which one is actually better.
I went with Aol+ DSL because there was no installtion of a seperate line, modem was free, line conditioners were free, and its $40 a month. If I had gone with Pacbell, I would have had to pay over $300 for install and modem, plus the monthly fee fluctuates from $40 to $70 a month.
I know that cable requires special installation. Im not too sure about prices though, I do know that cable in my area was the same price as pacbell DSL(install/service and modem).
Best thing to do is research the install/modem and monthly pricing for EVERY DSL/Cable Service in your area, then decide on that. Its also good to try and find people with them in your area and see how they like it. DSLReports.com can look up your zipcode and if people in your area have done reviews of their ISP's, then you can get a pretty good idea on which are good and which suck.
Just dont ever get satelite, and stay away from verizon wireless DSL(Ive heard very bad things about verizon).

Ignore what I said about pacbell before, they have changed since the last time I checked them.

I had dialup for 10 years.. just got Cable.. it's not bad.. get horendus lag at night on CS.. but that's the downside of cable..
as for customer service.. I don't like Cox Cable's Customer Service..
Called up to see why I couldn't get into my e-mail.. thought maybe the password was wrong or something.. the guy does the screen share thing.. asks me what's going on.. tell him I can't get in the mail.. and I don't want to use outlook because I don't really like it.. he goes and open outlook and starts to set it up.. I disconnect his screen sharing and curse him.. then my phone rings.. it's the tech.. asks what happened.. I told him I don't want outlook.. he goes into a 10 min speech about how outlook is the only way Cox allows you to get e-mail and that the web-mail option only retrives mail from your computer to that it has downloaded from cox. I tell him he is wrong and that Outlook is a retrival program that uses the pop3 and so on.. and that he needs to go to school.. he goes and checks it out.. and you can get your mail via webmail and you do NOT have to use outlook.. then he asks me to try there "default" password to try to get into my mail.. and it works..
so.. in the end.. they had not set my password up nor told me that I needed to change it from the default..
just hate stupid tech support..
BTW.. for just surfing.. uploading web sites.. so on.. Cox is great.. just don't ask for tech support..

SKYHN, DSL is shared as well. When you think about it, it isn't sahared like cable, but it is indeed shared.
Also, there are no speed caps by law on cable yet, like there is on DSL. This mite just be in my area though.

Both are deffinately good, do some research and you should find one you like.

I know DSL is shared, but with cable, if someone is downloading a lot, then it affects everyone. That is why DSL has 1.5mb caps, that way everyone always has a reserved amount of bandwidth.
I like that DSL is capped at 1.5 or even 2.5 on some. It keeps the speeds smooth.

The speed is great, as SKYHN said, and cable is affected more by the number of people downloading and how much they download. I have DSL and hardly ever run into problems.

DSL is also affected by how far away your computer is from the server, so there is no point in getting it if the server is really far away.

You mean the gateway, not server.
When I played LOD, I would get lower pings on the east coast server than the west coast, and Im in california.

I have cable and have no slowdowns or problems. Granted it is a lot faster at 4am then it is at 10pm, but not a big difference.

I have no problems with DSL either, both of them are good, they deffinitely beat out 56k.

Yea, that's what I meant.

DSL isn't really "shared' per say. The only place where it may get shared is at the C/O. Even then you get the bandwidth that you pay for, or at least your supposed to. Line quality may interfer with that. And if you don't get the speed you pay for complain until they fix it.
I work for an ISP and we were re-selling Verizon DSL, but we stopped due to Verizon's slowness with getting it out the door. All the customers that we currently have will continue to call until they get the service they paid for, which we in turn make sure they get it. But we don't really have much control over the process other than calling Verizon and another company that takes care of the actual T-1s distributing the dsl.
At any rate, I've looked into both options cable/DSL. I just ordered DSL today and am supposed to get the modem on Tuesday of next week. Sprint is my local telco, so I'll see how they do. All my friends up north including my g/f have cable. I'm so used the 3Mbs connection, so using a 512kbs connection will interesting. The speed to cost ratio is very much skewed when going with DSL though.
As for the sharing in cable. Unless you live in a highly populated area and all the people on the node that you are on are d/l'ing massive files then you shouldn't need to worry about speed. I know 4 guys that are all techies and they use the cable on their street heavily. They all get around 200-300KB constantly. They aren't the only ones on the street either.

Technically everything is shared if you think about it.
Oh and rifter, this post is uh 2 years old.

BIGGEST BUMP EVER!!!!!!
You sir deserve an award

Tis ok, lol. I was reading it because I was thinking of getting dsl. Now I do have DSL and enjoy it, but I wish that the d/l rate was higher. My connection is rated at 512Kb. With it I get a max of 50KB for d/l speed.
