The FBI wasn't kidding about the crack down on piracy. The leader of the group DrinkorDie has plead guilty to pirating many popular software titles:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A co-leader of "DrinkorDie," an international piracy ring that distributes software, games and movies over the Internet, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to one count of conspiring to commit copyright infringement, U.S. officials said.

John Sankus, 28, of Philadelphia, admitted his guilt in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, as part of a plea deal with prosecutors, they said. He will be sentenced on May 17, and could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

wow you paid millions to stop a 13 year old kid with a geocities website lol

Lower prices - More peoples buy

Simple as that

Raise prices = Pirates come out to play

Layoffs= Knowone has 3,000 for 3d studio max = piracy

Simple math which marketing peoples seem to forget about

Not everyones rich

what 13 year old kid? Sankus is 28 and either did this as a serious hobby or as a career.

No software company can afford to charge $5 for its products. beleive it or not, software is priced to cover costs and make a nice profit, not to gouge the consumer. any software that may be priced at $3000 is made for businesses or professionals for their careers, not for the consumer.

what piracy does is actually raise the cost, since the company sells less units than they otherwise would.

and since i know from bnet that people pirate $10 games, lowering prices wouldnt have much effect. people without morals or ethics dont suddenly acquire them because prices drop.

Woosh!

3 points for wenchy!

I agree piracy is wrong but I dont have 3,000 dollars for 3d software and if my buddy wants to give me it for free well im going to take it

I would gladly pay 50 dollars for 3d studio max but software companies dont care well then they just 50 dollars which could have been theres

you dont get it. that software wasnt developed for the consumer. it was made for business. and its priced at that level because they dont expect to sell a lot of copies.
