Slashdot Announces Subscription Plan

Slashdot.org has announced that they will be moving over to a new advertising system which will use ads similar to those at ZDNet and C|Net. A sad thing to see come, but it's necessary for them to provide the news and articles they do to their large reader base. In case you'd rather not have the ads, Slashdot is announcing a subscription that will allow users to view pages banner and ad free:

For some time now we have been developing a unique subscription system that we hope will make our users and advertisers happy. Please hit the link below to read an explanation about how the system works, and why it works that way. Also you will learn what a subscription will give you, and what our future plans are for it. (more here)

The system is designed to meet multiple users needs and will cost $5 per 1000 pages viewed. Slashdot estimates this will be $20 for the average reader.

It appears the internet is headed into becoming much like television.

I have the magical ability of ignoring infinite amounts of ads for free.

I'd pay for something with guaranteed content, like an online comic strip, however, I won't pay for something that just repeats what's already out there.

And I won't pay for forums. Forums are fun, entertaining, etc, but they just aren't worth paying for.

Slashdot is a good site, and I usually stop by there once or twice a day, but I have no problems with pop-up adds if they are to a minimum.

I don't post over as most of their topics don't really deal with things that I'm interested in.
