I'm having problems installing the software for the sidewinder precision 2 joystick. I've done it before and it has worked fine, but after i had to reinstall windows (argh), it doesnt work. Before the install starts, it says "unInstaller failed to initialize. You may not be able to uninstall." or something similar. Then it installs the files, and at the end it come up with an error that says "C:\-c" refers to a location that is unavailable" Then the next part of the install where you stick the cord into the usb port, it says the stick was not detected, no matter what i do. Finding support at microsoft was not something i wanted to do. So im trying here first...tips would be nice...

1. Right click on my computer and click on properties.
2. Click on the device manager tab
3. Click on plus sign next to sound, video, and game controllers
4. Click on (highlight) game port joystick and click properties button.
5. Click on driver tab, then click update driver
6. Click on specify the location of the driver and click next
7. Click on "display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want".
8. Make sure "show compatible hardware” is checked and highlight Joystick (Microsoft)(8-7-98)", then click next.
9. Let the driver install, and if it asks you if you want to keep any files, say NO. You want all of the old driver files.
10. After install, reboot the computer and you should be all set.

It seems to me that Microsoft used a buggy driver in windows ME. They should really test these things out before shipping products. Hope this helps!

The sidewinder joystick can also fail to show up due to an interrupt delay on the soundcard. There's a special utility available for it called configsw.exe
