Water-Cooling Goes Mainstream

Hitachi has developed a water-cooled notebook computer, a process normally reserved for big systems like supercomputers and servers.

Hitachi said it plans to introduce the computer commercially for Japanese corporate users in the third quarter of this year. The system eventually will make its way to the United States, according to the company.

The prototype uses a water-based solution to cool down its Pentium 4 processor. For years, researchers have been looking for ways to counter the fact that as processors get faster and more powerful, they generate more heat.

There also has been quite a bit of experimentation with water-cooling systems in desktop computers, particularly by hobbyists. Many companies on the Internet sell do-it-yourself water-cooling kits.

One company called Kryotech uses refrigeration equipment to cool systems. The Kryotech system is used by Compaq in some models. Another firm, Custom Computers, builds units made of plastic and pure aluminum or copper for cooling such processors as Pentiums, Celerons and Athlons.

Hobby-tech hits the bigtime.

I NEVER thought I would see Water Cooling in laptops. Thats gotta be one big thick laptop though, especially if it has a radiator.
