Windows XP and formatting of a disk(Word)

I just got XP, and when I try to save a Word Document to a disk it says it must be formatted on every disk I have tried. So when I try to format it says can't be formatted. I have no idea what it is saying that for.

Possibly the disc has the notch set to be write-protected. Make sure the notch in the back corner is set to cover up the opening and try again.

Yea !! Sounds like the write protection is on to me....
