Built My 1st Machine and I have a Problem....

I finally pieced together my first built machine and I attempted to install Windows 98 SE on it. Everything was terrible because my Athlon 1.4 was running like a 486 when installing Win 98. So Win98 tries to run but a blue screen of death popped up with some kind of VxD error message. So I look in the BIOS thinking that something was just set wrong. After looking on the net for the specific VxD error, I found that disabling the Level 1 cache may fix it. It got me into Windows but was so very slow. I think that I may have bad DDR ram. I have a Athlon 1.4 ghz chip and a Asus A7M266 Motherboard. I have no clue why this system doesn't fly like its suppost to.

I think you're onto something with the DDR RAM thing ... I'd suggest to buy a new RAM stick and see if it works ... you can always return it if you have the same results...

And can you tell us what VxD error you're getting?

VXD errors are usually driver related. The first thing you should do is update your AMD Northbridge drivers. It should be on a driver CD that came with the motherboard. If you don't have a CD, you can download it from here.

The type of VXD error you're getting might tell us which specific hardware is mad at you. It could be a memory issue but right now the error is to vague to know for sure.

If you want to check for memory errors, Goldmemory is a DOS based memory checker program available from OTS downloads. All you need is to be able to get to DOS mode, or a DOS or Win98 bootable disk that goes into DOS mode.
