CBS Marketwatch has information that Microsoft will be repairing defective Xboxes free of charge in Japan. The cd-roms on the Xbox are causing scratches on the outer edges of discs.
Microsoft Japan said it would take up to 10 days to replace the disk drive, or the whole machine. The company has not determined the cost of repairing or replacing any consoles or discs.
Microsoft Japan has received 588 customer complaints as of March 6 regarding the scratch marks.
I did not hear of this in the United States. Read more here.

I just happen to see something on CNN a min ago, and they said it is not just the Japan Xbox's but also U.S. Xbox's. They said it was a manufacturing error that is in all Xbox's manufactured in December and January. They didnt give a number of how many though.

ive heard of this happening from using CDs that peple have put their own labels on such as music CD and CD from stores rentals that dont do a god job of placing their own labels. but that is true for any CD tye drive. when i rent a vid i always peel all the stickers off the cd discs.

True, but these are apparently from some sort of mechanical defect on the CD drive on the units. Otherwise, no recall would be stated.
