very slow boot up

hi,
ive just installed a cdrw for my friend ,anyway i noticed his computer is very slow booting up.
after you power on the first boot sequence comes on showing the drives etc then a windows 98se screen then it goes to anothe boot type screen for a few seconds then another win 98 screen which seems to hang for about 15 seconds before booting into windows.
his system spec is pc chips 810 mobo 128mb pc133 ram,800mhz duron,15gb excelsior hard drive.
all brand new components at xmas.
ive run defrag an disk clean up and reinstalled a system start up dll file which had gone astray,i have run mcconfig to take out start up items i know are safe to do but still it remains very slow booting up.
what are the only files needed at start up to boot with minimum files ?
i cant think of any other reasons why it is so slow ..
if i ran win 98 se set up over his current set up will it keep his programs and files he already has or will it wipe them off...

ps:this was happening before the cdrw was installed.............

check ur network adapters it probably has a ton listed there. for each adapter or protocol installed it takes that much longer to boot the comp. thats usually what happens specially if the comp is store bought and not homegrown. right click network neighborhood hit properties and check out how many adapters and protocols u have. remove the ones u dont need. if ur not sure list em all here and some one can help ya with removing the un needed ones.
